Mercy Dockray

This is a master profile for her. But the dates are troubling.
She is much too young for the first marriage and children.

There are a lot of sources however.
I am wondering if there are two Mercy's that got tangled up.

Here is one find a grave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/54189473/mercy-dockray

Here is one of her husbands https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/54189297/john-bigland-dockray

One source (included in her profile) shows her coming from the Hazzard family. So that is confusing.

Lets try to sort this out.

Looking at the links in the profile, it seems to me that:
a) The spouse in the WikiTree link is an alternate name ... no reference for why 'Ebenezer' vs. Thomas Mathews who changed his name to Thomas Elliott.

b) The earliest of the children was listed as b. 1795 ... and none of the other references to that son Stephen Mathews->Elliott have anything other than a year -- which I would then venture that it is a 'circa' 1795. If so, he may have been born near or even after the sister b. 1798.

c) There are 3 children born before the listed marriage ... but in that time period, I wouldn't think that is a significant factor.

As to her being a Hazard ...

The dates of the children from both of the current marriages (as can be seen on her timeline) are rather consistent and 'work' with her age (if one allows the 1st-born to have been born a couple of years later than 1795).

Where there *is* disagreement with the "Hazard" book is in the parentage of Mercy' mother (James Perry & Mercy Potter vs. Benjamin Tallman & Elizabeth Gorton, weith the latter currently shown as Mercy's maternal grandparents). The Benjamin+Elizabeth link is not strongly supported by documents.

There don't appear to have been any reversible (recent) mis-merges on Mercy Peckham's profile.

It is possible there are two different 'Mercy's (with their birth dates improperly the same between them) and thus completely separate Mathews->Elliott family vs. the Dockray family, but I don't currently see anything which would strongly indicate "same" or "different" person(s) for Mercy.

I don’t think the same Mercy Peckham married both men.

DAR record (very skimpy):

MATTHEWS, EBENEZER Ancestor #: A075426
Service: NEW YORK Rank(s): PRIVATE
Birth: 1758 SENECA LAKE NEW YORK
Death: 1848 VIENNA CANADA

If he died 1848 in Canada, then his wife was not marrying another man in 1808, and being buried in 1850 in Rhode Island.

And if there was a divorce, it would be in the books.

She comes from a RI family, she’s also in the Gardiners of Narragansett book:

I don’t trust the DAR ref.

Several sources claim that Mercy Peckham was the daughter of William Peckham and Mercy Perry. Their daughter Mercy is said to have been born about 1783. This is believed to be false based on the ages of some of her children including the oldest Stephen. Mercy Peckham would have been too young to have had children during the early 1790s. Also Mercy Peckham, daughter of William and Mercy (Perry) Peckham is said to have married John Bigland Dockery in 1800. [SIC: 1808]

And the Thomas Alva Edison genealogy project does not accept her, either.
