Managers of Robert Bulkeley, Sheriff of Cheshire,
I am contacting you about this profile: Constantine's Dad...
Hi Erica,
I wonder if there is a missing connection or two for Robert. If you refer to the “About” description below it says that Robert is the ancestor of three branches Of Bulkeley, yet he has no children by his wife shown. How is that possible?
Sincerely,
David Vincent Bigelow
Before we review the “about,” let’s examine the sources compiled so far.
Attached to the profile is this one:
https://media.geni.com/p13/d7/64/b2/a7/5344483c676f3c9f/the_history...
Which shows the marriage but doesn’t examine any issue of Isabel de Egerton
A citation for Isabel de Egerton is from Burke’s at
http://www.thepeerage.com/p44933.htm#i449323
Isabel de Egerton was the daughter of Philip de Egerton and Ellen de Saint-Pierre.1
She married, thirdly, Sir John Delves.1
She married, firstly, Robert Bulkeley.1
She married, secondly, John Venables.1
She died in 1395, without surviving issue.1
Her married name became Venables.1 Her married name became Bulkeley.1 Her married name became Delves.
——
So far, no children of this Robert Bulkeley.
Private User I’ve cleaned up the tree, profile, and notes.
I do not see any surviving issue from this Robert Bulkeley, of Oteworth
Robert Bulkeley & his wife Ellen De Wittenhall cannot have been from
Isabel de Egerton so need to find their correct place in the Bulkeley tree.

So to define the scope of this project a little more, it appears we are verifying the (medieval) English ancestry of Rev. Edward Bulkeley
Would that be a fair assessment?
I started with a chart compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus:
The Bulkeley genealogy : Rev. Peter Bulkeley, being an account of his career, his ancestry, the ancestry of his two wives, and his relatives in England and New England, together with a genealogy of his descendants through the seventh American generation / compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus. Author Jacobus, Donald Lines, 1887- page 18
https://archive.org/details/bulkeleygenealog00jaco_0/page/n17 Archive.Org
And added to the profiles described on the chart.
The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester: Comp. from ..., Volume 2 By George Ormerod. Page 652 [https://books.google.com/books?id=dIY1AQAAMAAJ&lpg=RA1-PA290&am... GoogleBooks] wife unnamed. Children Robert, Richard, Peter, William, Cicily m — Wever
So either this Robert was not the Robert who married Isabel Egerton, or he had an unnamed 1st wife.
Is that the issue?
And why does http://cybergata.com/roots/8151.htm have him with no children ?
Anne Brannen If I could trouble you for an opinion?
Ormerod shows children, no wife named:
https://media.geni.com/p13/aa/9a/2e/79/5344484aea53882f/6044e34e-c8...
And a short article:
https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000090166685982&
Collins, less reliable, has the children by Isabel de Egerton:
https://books.google.com/books?id=PPU6AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA8#v=onepage...
Whom Ormerod clearly shows as having died without surviving issue:
https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000090165403864&
So.
- Wrong Robert for Isabel’s husband?
- unknown wife for his children ?
Not a problem, I just more need opinion on this one marriage. And of course you’ll be interested in the Welsh inter marriages when we get this sorted. :)
So far I’m inclining to Isabel Egerton married a Robert Bulkely “of Malpas,” whoever that was, no children so EOL & we don’t much care. :)
And add an NN wife as mother of Ormerod’s charted children.
I’m a little taken aback that Nancy Lopez’s Cybergata seems to have gotten it wrong, as I’ve found her work reliable, and her site easy to understand due to her tasteful extracting and Links to source material. So I’m presuming there’s controversy.
I haven’t yet found a discussion on soc.gen.med but I haven’t looked very hard for one yet.
I'm looking at
https://books.google.com/books?id=K3MaAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA85&dq=r...
and from this, it looks like we are tangling up some generations.
William Bulkeley marries Maud Davenport. One of their children is Robert Bulkeley, who marries Agnes. One of their children is Robert Bulkeley, who married Isabel Egerton the daughter of Philip. They have two sons, John and Robert, and John is the father of William, who married Margaret Molineaux. And William and Margaret had several children.
That’s Burke’s 1866
A Genealogical History of the Dormant: Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct Peerages of the British Empire Sir Bernard Burke Harrison, 1866 - Baronetage - 636 pages. Page 85.
With the pedigree of Thomas James Bulkely, 2nd viscount, dsp 1822.
——
Burke’s solves the “two sheriffs” issue by the additional Robert: William m Maud Davenport > [Robert m Agnes]> Robert m Isabel Egerton > John m ?? ...
But runs right up against Ormerod: Isabel Egerton dsp 1396.
Collins's peerage of England; genealogical, biographical, and historical, Volume 8 Arthur Collins, Sir E 1812. Page 8 - 9 https://books.google.com/books?id=PPU6AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA8#v=onepage...
Has William m Maud Davenport > Robert m Isabel Egerton > Robert, Richard, Cicily [no son John]
——
I’m wondering if Ormerod’s chart postulates a missing generation that Burke’s calls “Robert + Agnes”
I do not see a John or an Isabel Egerton in Ormerod. Otherwise closest to Collins.
And Ormerod’s article is here
