Lt. Kenneth Mission Pennington was a 20-year old Royal Flying Corps pilot in early July 1918 and had successfully completed a mission to Urmia in Persia (now Iran). My grandmother was about 17 years old at the time and was among the amazed inhabitants that greeted Lt. Pennington upon his landing at Urmia. My grandmother and most of the crowd had never seen an airplane before. Lt. Pennington was awarded the Air Force Cross (AFC).
