Joseph Walder asked for "suggestions for archival research about my
GRABER/GRAEBER ancestors of Sanok
First, i would do a single-surname search for GREBERs in the Sanok
area...try to connect the families from the various sources. Those
family trees will almost certainly be tied to yours eventually, and
you may find connections with living descendants with the same
genealogical interests. Once found, DNA autosomal testing is another
way to corroborate the descendant connections.
Next, try the JRI-Pl database, as they have online: Polish State Archives
Location Years Available Indexed Years Online Type Status
Archive 60 Fond 421 1890 - 1906 M
Archive 60 Fond 424 1864 1864 B
Archive 60 Fond 424 1867 1867 B
Archive 60 Fond 424 1869 - 1913 1869 - 1905 B
...although JRI=PL doesnt seem to have the later birth records.
next, Joseph, try the Sanok Archives in the Polish National Digital Archives.
For research in the Polish National Digital Archives (NDA) for Western
Galicia. I would suggest that it is easier to research these archives
directly with four tools:
...Howard Fink's NDA Guide for JRI-Poland , which can be downloaded
from http://jri-poland.org/help/NDA_Guide.pdf. It gives step by step
instructions.
...JRI-PL's galician vital record titles
translated...http://jri-poland.org/galicia/GalicianVitalRecords_Titles_Nov2002.pdf,
...Google translate for translating data within the records, and
...Chrome for translating web pages, titles, search commands.
I usually begin by going directly to the NDA at
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/ and key in a town name and a polish word
for Jewish Records (Hebrajski or Hebrew, Israel or izraelickie, Jewish
or Juden, Mojzesz or Zydow); each record collection uses different
titles. You can use asterisks as wildcards at the end of any term.
Then i click scans only, to reduce the number of results, then i use
Chrome to translate the titles of the results.
Within the NDA i did see this item for GREBER but it was not
scanned...outline of the woodshedery of mojzesz Greber from 1878
I did see this file of scanned documents: Book of Births of Sanok
1906-1913...these are 140 scanned pages in polish.Next is the really
hard part...slogging thru the unindexed records...but wow if you find
something!
And, by the way, check out the April Galicia course on
