Wow, I don't know because unfortunately, it's telling me that the program can only be seen if I'm in Sweden, and I'm not sure how to get around this - I am in the USA (California). Sven Nels Delander (Nilsson) was my great-grandfather. He came to America in 1880. I am extremely curious about his life in Sweden as it seems to me he came to American later in life - he was 36 in 1880. I know he was in farming school at some point, and he took the family name "Delander". His patronymic name was Sven Nilsson. I am extremely curious about this....are you able to send me a screen shot or tell me what this film says? I don't read Swedish, but I translated the title, and it is "Satan's year", and it is apparently a documentary about the famine of 1867. I had heard about this famine but only recently from a distant Swedish cousin on Ancestry.com. Thank you so much for your e-mail - I am curious about this video now. I would love to figure out how I can view it!! Thank you!! -Kathryn Delander
ok, I found a version of the video that I could view here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FmD0upgT5s. I recognize the clip where there's a pic of a boat and then a pic of 5 people - two men with their hand on the shoulder of another man in the middle, and then the narrated references "Nils Delander". However, I don't think this man is my great-grandfather as the facial features look different. My great grandfather had a wider nose and thicker lips. Also, this man was dressed pretty well. My great-grandfather was a poor farmer, and I wonder if he had the money to dress that well. Also, he was 36 when he left in 1880 - not sure when that pic was taken but possibly later? I don't know. So, I'm about 90% sure it's not him. However, I appreciate your taking the time to notice and check and reach out to me!! Thank you!!
Interesting. One of my 23andMe Swedish matches sent me this information 2 years ago, as she reads Swedish and is into genealogy:
"I followed Sven in the church records and indeed you found the right Sven Nilsson. In 1867 he moved to Östra Vram and returned two years later with the title lantbrukselev (student of agriculture) and had then added Delander as surname. In 1872 he leaves the birth parish of Loshult for Malmbruks parish which is in the county of Jönköping. In 1874 he returned and the last entry for him in the husförhörsbook is when he left for America 14 Apr 1880."
So, it seems my great-grandfather did travel in 1867 but to Ostra Vram, and that's where he actually became a "Delander". I think Sven he a younger brother who also took the name - John Delander. It's odd to me that at 36 years, he left for America, and he never had a wife or family in Sweden prior to that. Maybe it was because of these difficult years of famine and poverty? He married in 1889 and had a child in 1890 when he was 46 years old, then his second son (my grandfather was born in 1893) when Swen was 49. I keep wondering if he had a wife and family in Sweden before he left for America....
