The Utica Directories are a good source of information about people who lived in Utica from 1830 to 1870 and beyond. The 1845 City Directory and the 1859 Directory are online on the US Gen Web Oneida County site -they also have a later one(can't remember the year) which is for me after my most important people left for Floyd County, Iowa, but will probably help another researcher. The main Public Library has many of the other directories, and the Historical society in Utica also has the directories and other valuable records and information. I think that my ggg grandmother Louisa Brown might have been Louisa Bly originally. She might have also had a previous marriage like her husband John Snyder did before they married in 1841. One of their son's was named Fredrick Bly Snyder, and a Mehitable Bly was living at their house in 1850 (census). I have been trying to find out the answer to that for years.
