This tree is a mess....I don't know where to begin to correct it. EVERY single generation had someone named SIMON HUGHES. It is very tricky to place the right Simon with the right wife in the right location in the right time frame.
Research MUST be done before just sticking someone here or there on a tree. Back in May of 2014 I posted what I could prove then to be the Hughes tree as I knew it. I don't recognize it now--and there is very little proof on what has been added.
Maybe someday I'll try to fix this tree, but for now I just don't really bother with this site. TOO many errors! No proof, just guesses or a lot of "looks right"!
I’m sorry for that, Resa Nichols Hennings - you have a popular surname.
If you want to post here the parents of this Simon Hughes, we can at least do that piece of tree repair.
Best, Erica, volunteer curator
Thank you so much, Erica, for intervening! Take what you wish from the following. I don’t know how to make it my starting tree again (as I did in 2014). I am most grateful for your help.
Simon Hughes probably b c1735 VA, d "Smith Co, TN, Nov 1823 Term of Court." His dau Polly P. Nichols (as named in his will; she was probably Mary; and Hughes was spelled "Hughs" in the will) m Bird Nichols c 1812?? VA? TN? Polly and Bird are my 3g-grands.
Simon m Martha "Patty" Biggars c Sep 1782 probably in VA. She was the dau/o William Biggars/ers and Martha Pollard. Martha/Patty first m Robert Douglas/s, Sr. 15 Jun 1772, Louisa Co, VA. They had 4 known ch: William, Robert, David, Catherine. Robert Douglas' funeral was 21 Jan 1781, Louisa Co, VA (per "The Douglas Register" p. 336).
Simon and Martha "Patty" Biggars Douglas Hughes had 5 ch: 1-John Beverly/Biggars Hughes b 22 Jun 1783 Goochland (Iater Powhatan) Co, VA (date from "The Douglas Register; helped to determine when Simon and Martha/Patty m). John Beverly/Biggars Hughes m a cousin, Nancy Hughes (probable dau/o John Hughes and Sally Tarlton). 2-Martha "Patsy" Flemming Hughes b 22 Dec 1786, VA, m William Flippin Flowers 23 Nov 1806 Buckingham Co, VA. 3-Polly P. Hughes--see above--and she b c1790-ish VA?TN?, d c1835 Smith Co, TN; her husband Bird Nichols went to Marion Co, IL in 1838 according to an old family letter; many of Polly and Bird's 9 ch had moved to Marion Co earlier; that is where Bird d in 1844. 4-Nancy M. Hughes b c1790 m Samuel Brown Robinson (no more info). 5-Simon P. Hughes b c1798 VA m c1816 Mary P. Hubbard; after Mary d c1824, Simon P. moved to Bowie Co, TX, where he d 1844. NOTE: Simon P. and Mary Hubbard Hughes had 9 c. One of them (yet another!) Simon P. Hughes b 14 Apr 1830 Smith Co, TN, m Ann Eliza Blakemore 2 Jun 1857 in Monroe Co, Arkansas. Simon went on to serve as Capt., 23rd Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War; was elected to the Arkansas House of Reps in 1866, served as Attorney General of the state 1874-77, Governor 1885-89, Justice of the state Supreme Court 1889-96, and d 29 Jun 1906 at home in Little Rock, Pulaski Co, AR.
There is MUCH confusion over two Simons marrying two Biggers women! The above Simon, m Martha "Patty" Biggers/ars. The above John Hughes and Elizabeth Tarlton are *believed" to be the parents of yet ANOTHER Simon P. Hughes who m Betsy (?Elizabeth?) Coleman Bigger/ers/ar/ars. She *appears* to be the dau/o James Bigger/ar/ers/ars. Betsy Coleman Bigger was b 20 Jan 1780, VA. On 12 Jan 1803 Prince Edward Co, VA she m the Simon P. Hughes who was b 26 Jan 1778, PE Co, VA. They DID go to Smith Co, TN for a time, but after Betsy d (22 Jan 1851 Smith Co, TN) this Simon P. went back to PE Co, VA where he died Dec 1859.
It is also seen in many places about a Simon Lew Hughes and John Lew Hughes. This comes from an incorrect handwriting interpretation of the abbreviation “Sen” for senior…..as in Simon Hughes, Sen., and John Hughes, Sen. The 1820 Smith Co, TN census shows the two men as “Hughes, Simon Sen” and Hughes, John Sen.” Someone guessed that Sen was “Lew,” posted it online that way, and the urban legend error continues. (In the old handwriting, a capital L and a capital S were written very similarly. Then add a flourish on the last letter of the word…and magically Sen = Lew.)
Ok, that’s hard for me to follow in tree repair (but great references, thank you). Let’s start by going down a generation to
Can you write in his profile the names of his parents? I see at
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/4:1:LH3X-9MN
Parents: Simon Hughes Sen., Elizabeth Coleman Hughes (born Bigger)
Wife: Elisabeth Hughes (born Mather)
Erica--I've been working on untangling the Hughes! It's still not 100%, but I think some areas have been improved. I "invented" Simon Hughes #1 G9N3-79S on Family Search, I believe the information coming forward is fairly correct. I could not always merge names since I don't know which ones are correct and which are not. So there are (more!) duplicates in there...like William Hughes. Simon #1's son John m Sally Tarlton LHV8-R5V. Others show her m to a different John Hughes, with ancestors going back and back I cannot prove all that is in those trees, so kept Sally with the John (G9N7-SKQ) I'm fairly sure of. Hope this helps.
Great, I see him there:

Now to find the match on Geni ...
Here we go. Simon Hughes
Resa Nichols Hennings This looks much cleaner, very nice. I’m going to make it an MP
Erica --
I notice Resa had started a Discussion from that Simon, so accessible from his Discussion Tab, on what is currently showing as that Simon's Parents - - and see Justin wrote much info in the About on what is currently showing as that Simon's Mother - but which lists her sons and does not include a Simon in that list!
Resa Nichols Hennings , Private User is quite correct. This Simon Hughes is not a known child of Rice Alec Hughes Jr & Rice Alec Hughes Jr
I have disconnected him from them for you, and put links to “wrong parents” in his profile.
Thank you very much, Lois. Shows how important it is to put notes in the Geni profile “about.”
Thanks Erica and Lois--I probably used the wrong word above in my 3/30 note..."invented." Simon Hughes #1 G9N3-79S is my documented starting point coming forward. I know you both picked up on that, but I wanted to make sure. I'm not terribly familiar with the Geni conventions...is that what the MP designation means?
MP is Geni lingo for “Master Profile.” Two MPs cannot be merged together. It’s a technical way to try & make sure all the Simon’s don’t get mixed up again.
