I have removed the following from the overview of Hans Christian Pedersen Lange

I wonder if there is any relation:
1787 Census: Rasmus Christian Lange had two children:
* Hans Christian Lange who was 8, born 1779
* Marie Kirstine Lange who 10, born 1777

Please check if this family already exists or create a new branch and add sources.

No problem. Now check if "Pedersen" should appear.

Comment: Patronymic names are not used very much in Denmark after 1750 in families with a real familiy surname, in contrast to other Scandinavian countries. Most of these patronymic names are "invented" by Geni users probably to facilitate the search for ancestors i.e. Hans Christian Lange's father's given name would be Peder. I very much doubt that you will ever find "Pedersen" in primary souces for that profile.

I use to delete the patronymic middle name without further discussion.

Therefore, I would delete every "Hansen" or "Hansdatter" from his chlidren's names. Absolutely grotesque and artificial.

Nah, very often the primary sources only use the patronymic name.

Personally I started adding the patronymic middle names as a merge guide, - we had a period way to many bad merges without. We have many users that only use a similarity in names as enough to conclude that it is a match. I agree they could be removed if we does not have any sources.

It is a pity for this specific profile there is added so many details but not a single source.

Bjørn you cannot be very familiar with Danish customs. The patronymic names were mainly used in rural Denmark up to the middle of the 19th century but in families with true family surnames they are very rarely in seen in primary sources after 1740-1750. I have of course not checked every churchbook entry for that family although it would be quite easy given the adress in Copenhagen. Here is however a clear indication - a son of Hans Christian Lange, Peter Nikolaj Hansen(!) Lange can be found in Vor Frue Churchbook

The father's name Hans Christian Lange (no Pedersen) no hint of "Hansen" in the name of the son Peter Nicolai. Therefore, I would delete the "Pedersen" and the "Hansen" since these names were never used by themselves.

We can even move back to Sunday 5 January 1755 (again Vor Frue churchbook) the baptism of Hans Christian Lange

"Sr. Peder Lange, Brøgger i Vandkunsten og hustru Martha Ølgod, Hans Christian etc. " No patronymic names for the parents!

Jens, - you missed the points: We had too many bad merges on Geni because people did not check details like the name of parents, and thought they were the same or close related just because the names looked like, - details that has been demonstrated just recently in these discussions, so we as managers started to add the patronymic name as middle names, which helped a lot. You can ignore them by selecting not showing middle names in your preferences, and since the number of new duplicates seem to be reduced, except by management hunters, we can probably remove them.

Second point was that there was not sources on this profile even if it obviously is some, - his burial as Hans Christian Lange you find as a record match.

Most discussions can be avoided if people add sources instead of just facts.

Bjørn - I am fully aware that these "middle names" can be useful when cleaning up the Geni Tree. But I think that familysearch also is responsible for these in my view artificial names. As a source hunter I completely agree with your second point.
