Do we know how Bucalo was changed to Bucaro? Considering this is a few generations before immigrating to the U.S, I'm confused by the name change. I also am seeing that Biagio was the father of 4, 2 of which share the last name Bucalo and 2 that have the changed last name to Bucaro. I find that odd.

I don't know exactly when but there are other Sicilian names where spelling varies in the 1700s and 1800s where the letter 'r' and 'l' are switched. For example Sangregoli and San Gregorio.... Genualdi and Genuardi...there are more.

Yes, if you look at Biagio Bucalo and the years they were born they were born before civil records in Sicily, so their primary record of birth to see would be their baptism record which is in Latin which adds some more interesting spelling variations to names sometimes too.

It could be interesting to look at their marriage records and death records to see if there is time where it might have changed, but I wouldn't guarantee it. Sometimes i think they just flipped a coin...

The topic reminds me of the Scafidi Moreci family where I think I saw one guy have both names on his birth record, and one of the names on his marriage record and then the other name on his death record....makes for a fun puzzle....

Look at this one. The marriage record for Vincenzo Bucaro says Vincenzo Bucalo: "Italia, Palermo, Termini Imerese, Stato Civile (Tribunale), 1862-1910," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9MZ-7RFY?cc=1947613&a... : 20 May 2014), Altavilla Milicia > Matrimoni 1862-1870 > image 6 of 1358; Tribunale di Termini Imerese (Termini Imerese Court, Termini Imerese).

Look at the index page at the end of the 1862 marriages and it says Vincenzo Bucaro: "Italia, Palermo, Termini Imerese, Stato Civile (Tribunale), 1862-1910," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9MZ-7R3M?cc=1947613&a... : 20 May 2014), Altavilla Milicia > Matrimoni 1862-1870 > image 60 of 1358; Tribunale di Termini Imerese (Termini Imerese Court, Termini Imerese).
