Hi I have considerable family tree information for my paternal and maternal ascendents however cannot link my Tait Family to the Carmarthen family. My great grandfather was William George Tait married to Sophie van Bosch, her youngest were twins David and Frank. My grandfather was David who had five children with Elsie, the second of which was my late father David who immigrated to the UK in his 30s.

Family names are Isaac, Janet, Christopher, Jean etc

I would be grateful if someone could give me the missing link from 1819 to 1870s please? Done all the research 're ship, Kew Garden correspondence etc.

Kind Regards, Karen

Hi Shane

Thanks for this. I will put my info on the site over the next few weeks for sharing. I only have some time on weekends.

I do particularly want to see what is evidenced for Isaac Tait and Janet Barr. Scottish records have not provided me with any info yet. There are family anecdotes that their passage on the Carmarthen had been paid for. The cost would have been more than a year's wages at the time. Recently found that during the Highland clearances the land owners started paying families the passage.

Tait is a common name from the Scottish Borders (Reivers) to Shetland and Orkney. Originally Old Norse "Taetr" meaning cheerful or gay. The Taits are associated with the McInnes and Ogilvy clans.

Regards, Karen

Any connection to Tait chips sold by Checkers ??

Wish we knew Trevor, it will the younger generation, not so easy to get there info

H everybody - according to my website the last correspondence on this issue was in January 2019. Perhaps your questions have been answered. I have just joined the genealogy processes. Anyway, My second great grandfather was John Tait, brother of William George Tait mentioned by Karen above. John was married to Clasina Adriana van Loggerenberg in 1832, and after her death to Adriana Johanna Barnard in 1839. His second child with Adriana was Lovina Catharina Tait, and she married Hendrikus Hermanus Muller in 1861, and then in 1867 married Joachim Christoffel van Loggerenberg, my great grandfather. One of his sons, Jan Tait van Loggerenberg (1869-1941) was married to Johanna Wilhelmina Steyn (1877-1944), the daughter of Johan Willem Kemp Steyn (1850-1911 - I cannot locate his - Johan's - parents - perhaps someone can help?), and Aletta Frederika Black. My father was Daniel Cornelius Steyn (1916-2007). Thought you may find this interesting. Regards.
Etienne van Loggerenberg (1944)

Incidentally, I have conflicting information regarding some of the parents of the Tait Progenitors, Isaac Tait, * abt 1780, from Eyemouth, Berwick, Scotland, who was married to Janet Barr - her father is given as William Barr, and it is his wife that I have a conflict about: was it Jean Nisbet or Janet McCunn? Can anybody help?
Thanks
Etienne
