Why is that on some of the profiles in my tree are marked as private and geni will not allow me to alter it to public.

you cant make living profiles public

There are numerous living profiles on my tree that are public.

Some of them are. And those i understand. But most of them are not and i should be able to manage them but i cant. The control varies and that is my concern.

Visit the profile of one of these public profiles that is a living profile. Copy the URL from your browser and past it here. I'll be able to look at that specific example and try to explain the circumstances around it.
