@Thomas Allen Boutwell was my 4th great grandfather and I find it truly sad to see such misinformation being purported as fact and perpetuated.
I have been Y-DNA tested to 500 markers and several purported Boutwell cousins have been Y tested to 111 markers. Descendants of the Burton Boutwell purported to be the father of Thomas Allen Boutwell are among those tested and we do not share a haplogroup and they are not a match to me; their DNA matches to surname Ramsey with a haplogroup of I-M253 and are closely related to those with a terminal SNP of I-FGC21735. Descendants of Thomas Allen Boutwell descend from surname O'Guin/O'Quin and share a haplogroup of R-M253 with a terminal SNP of R-BY3887.
Autosomal (atDNA) testing supports a strong connection between descendants of Thomas Allen Boutwell and John A. Boutwell but does nothing to suggest or support a father-son relationship. It will not be possible to determine a time to most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) for descendants of Thomas Allen and John A Boutwell until a male descendant of John is Y tested.
