What sources prove the existence of Mummolin, Mayor of the Palace of Neustria?

Page 89, LES MONUMENS DE LA MONARCHIE FRANÇOISE, QUI COMPRENNENT L'HISTOIRE ..., Volum 1

Book dates from 1729, which accounts for the archaic quality of the spelling and typeface. But it also calls into question whether the conclusions are still supported by more recent research - and it's also noticeable that no primary evidence is presented.

Agreed.

According to this book he was a general and a prefect in his time. Father of Bodegisel and Bobon.

Ratbod was a Frisian duke and not the same person as Bobon

What are the sources they are using, Tor.
Always, we need the sources.

I think you're definitely correct that he exists - but to create his family accurately is the difficulty.

And watch out, because there seem to have been two Mummolins.

From https://www.suppressedhistories.net/secrethistory/kingsvswitches.html

Fredegonde, who had risen to become queen of the Franks, began to accuse her enemies of magically causing harm to her kin. She used the sorcery charge to eliminate Mummol, the king's favorite. [Accounts of the accusation differ; Lea has it causing the impotence of her grandson, while Cauzons and Summers (Geography, 354-5) say it was causing her son's death by dysentery.]

The queen had a number of Parisian women arrested and tortured. They were forced to say that they were witches who had killed many people and that Mummol hired them because he was doomed to die. The gist was that he sacrificed the prince's life in order to save his own. Fredegonde ordered some of the women burned, others strangled, while still others were broken on the wheel. She denounced Mummol to the king, who had him bound and tried for sorcery.

Under torture, the once-court-favorite wouldn't confess to killing the prince but finally said he had used unguents and brews to gain royal favor. The torture resumed. When Mummol was nearly dead, Fredegonde released him, confiscated his property and sent him off to Bordeaux in a cart. He died en route. Legal safeguards against false accusation had proved useless when the accusers were members of the ruling family. But most historians pass over the torture and execution of the scapegoated women, concentrating on what happened to a powerful man in the court.

I think the last three posts by Erica Howton are very interesting, especially the middle one.

It specifically provides the reference material used.
It also details Mummolin's marriage and his two sons, including Duke Bobon.
If you follow Bobon's link it also provides a list of references, and details regarding his marriage and his children.

Well done, Erica.

Do we now have enough justification to connect these profiles to the WFT?

According to Erica's link to google: https://books.google.com/books?id=_jIJAAAAQAAJ&lpg=PA302&ot...
Mommol is said to be a general and not a Mayor of the Palace, nor according to: https://books.google.no/books?id=6o88A3PIHgkC&printsec=frontcov...
The last book is about Eunius Mummol.

That's a perennial trap that lurks for the unwary researcher. Someone finds an unusual name here, a similar unusual name there, and jumps to the conclusion that they are the same person. Well, they might just *not* be.

I've had a lot of trouble convincing people that Josephus (W.) Waters, of the John Waters line of Anne Arundel, is not the same person as Josephus Burton Waters, of the *Samuel* Waters line in the same county. (They were cousins, though, on both sides.)

Josephus W. stayed put - Josephus B. went over the horizon and beyond.

Well, according to the list of Mayors of the Palace listed at : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_of_the_Palace, Landric was the first Mayor of the Palace inNeustria, who first were Mayor in Austrasia and Gundulf was before him..
Mommol/Mummol is mantioned in four books I have and all says the same that he was a general.
I do not find that he was a Mayor of the Palace at any time.

I am posting this reply on this discussion, and also on several other related discussions. I would like to re-focus these discussions to the original issues.

On 12/14/18 I posted on the Medieval Dups thread 2 dups for duke Bobon, both locked and neither connected to WFT. I had created a temporary 3rd version in order to attach Bobon's daughter, Ermengarde d'Austrasie

Sharon Doubell felt she needed more info, and started several profile discussions questioning the very existence of Bobon, his children, his brother (Duke Bodogisel) and his father, Mummolin. This was the correct thing to do. There have been many posts from different users providing a variety of sources. My opinion is that the post by Erica Howton (https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wtm2&id=I...) is particularly definitive, but that is just my opinion.

Side digressions have also occurred, including whether or not Mummolin ever held the title of " Mayor of the Place of Neustria".

However, the original issue of the three Bobon duplicates has not yet been decided, nor whether his relationship with his father, brother and children have acceptable sources to allow them to exist.

I am not sure more info will be forthcoming, since the last post was 1 week ago. Perhaps we could make a decision based on what was already found and posted?
