Is this Thomas Pettit who married Katherine really the son of William Pettus? Why should he change his surename? How do you know?
Is there a source about it?
There are many Pettit in English early church records which has nothing to do with the Pettus Family. There is for example a Thomas Pettit from Exeter arriving 1639 in the colonies.

A resource cited is 1973, Gerald M. Petty: Petty, Wright, Riley and Related Families.

I see. But what does it exactly say? I could not find anything in the web.

Just a comment that all contemporary documents give the name as Pettit or Pettitt. Some later documents list his son as Petty, and daughter Dorothy is recorded as the daughter of Thomas Pettitt in deeds. There's a lot of wishful thinking surrounding the Pettus family.

Well, then Gerald M. Petty is not a good source for me.
