Managers of Daniel Alexander Steinschneider,
I am contacting you about this profile: Daniel Alexander Steinschneider
Hi all. Daniel Alexander Steinschneider is not the father of Babette (Betty) Singer.
Rabbi Daniel Prustitz (Prosnitz) (Steinschneider) is the correct father of Babette, Marie, Amalie, Josephine and Mayer (Meir). I have the original supporting documentation for this including the Ehe Vertrag for the marriage in German signed by Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz and Isak Hirsch Singer (Presburg 1842) naming Babette (Betty) as his daughter and the Ketubah in Hebrew also signed by Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz and Isak Hirsch Singer. (son of Rabbi Asher)
I also have family trees prepared by Rabbi Israel Singer, the youngest brother of Isak Hirsch Singer prepared around 1900 that show the relationships.
I am in possession of letters between Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz and his daughter Babette (Betty) and from Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz to his son in law Isak Hirsch Singer and vice versa!
Roy, we are doubly related to Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz as an older daughter of his, Marie married Mayer Stroh Klein a Maggid in Pressburg, their daughter Rosalie married our great great grandfather Wilhelm, who was the son of Isak Hirsch and Babette. Yes the first cousins married, not uncommon in those times.
I am happy to provide further information if of use.
Hope you are well Roy. Hello Randy.

Hi again. I should add to my previous email that I believe the error possibly stems from a family tree put together sometime after the war by a relative of ours. It notes correctly that Rabbi Daniel Prosnitz Steinschneider was the head of the Presburg Beth Din but shows his birthdate incorrectly as 1785. I believe that this family tree was put together as the result of blending of some original family documents with some additional research in Europe, and that a record of a Daniel Steinscneider b.1785 was found from the same district and assumed to be one and the same person. It is not!
Rabbi Daniel was born around 1759 and married at least 3 times according to my great grandfather Dr Martin Singer's written notes. From everything that I have seen by way of documentation that we have the family never really went by the name Steinschneider during Rabbi Daniel’s time except for on official governmental style documents. They were known by the family name Prosnitz or Prustitz in the community within which they lived. The Chatam Sofer memorial in Bratislava where the famous Rabbinical figures are buried lists Rabbi Daniel as Daniel Prosnitz Steinschneider but on his gravestone is written in Hebrew lettering, “Daniel Prustitz”. These are all variations on the town named Prostejov near Tobitschau where Rabbi Daniel grew up and initially studied. Prostejov in the Czech/Slavic, Prosnitz in German and Prustitz in the Yiddish/Hebrew!
The Ehe Vertrag written in German or Hoch Deutsch mentioned in my previous email reads, the marriage of Isak Hirsch Singer to Betty Prosnitz daughter of Daniel Prosnitz. The Hebrew wedding arrangement letter translation reads in part, … the Groom Isak Hirsch the gift the son of the Rabbi the learned Asher… and goes on... the Rabbi, the Judge, the famous the learned Daniel Prostitz may he be long lived distinguished in the community who stands father of the virgin the bride …
It would appear that for some time after marriage the couple lived in Presburg as their first two children Wilhelm and Bernard were both born there. Some of Isak Hirsch's early religious qualifications are signed by the Ksav Sofer, the head of the Presburg Yeshiva and the religious head of the community. I cannot confirm but I have a view from the various personal letters some in a form of Yiddish and some in German that Isak Hirsch and Babette (Betty) may have lived separately later in life though never divorced.
