They’ve found parents to be a William and Frances
Son of William Adams and Frances (Unknown) Adams
Not the John Adams, of Virginia & Elizabeth Russell Adams currently showing on Geni.
Any objections to this change ?
Birth place is a hack-and-mash: "Church Hills, Fairfax, North Cumberland County", Virginia Colony, (Present USA)
"Church Hill" is a district in Richmond, VA (Richmond incorporated 1742)
Fairfax is the county seat of Fairfax County (separated from Prince William County 1742; Fairfax City incorporated 1859).
There is not and never has been a "North Cumberland" County, VA.
Northumberland County originally occupied most of the Northern Neck, from 1644 to 1651-1653, when first Lancaster County (1651) and then Westmorland County (1653) was split off from it (and they continued making like amoebas until there were some 95(!) counties).
From reading the notes in https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-36843
It looks like John was “not” the carpenter transported from Kent Island, and that he was born In Northumberland County.
It’s always “fun” cleaning up the Adams families:)
I’m having trouble with a chronology for Frances Routt as mother of John “Francis” Adams, of Hunting Creek
Thoughts ?
As per DNA test results, Gabriel Adams, of Fairfax County has been disconnected from this family lone.
Thanks, all of you, for your great thoughts!! This research has been a real "eye-opener" for me as an Adams descendant! Talking about trouble, I had to read/reread the LDS microfilm at the LDS church online, which can't be viewed from home computers due to copyright per LDS, but in order to follow the Frances Adams, widow, of William Adams, who remarried Richard Routt, as the MOTHER of John Francis Adams, one needs to see the original microfilm court copy of the deed. I wrote an abstraction to Wikitree. The abstracted book at the NC Archives left off the most important part of the John Adams/Katherine deed abt 1703 selling Northumberland land to the Shirley neighbor, but the MICROFILM shows this part at the end of the deed where "Frances Routt" signs away her dower right to the land, along with two of her Routt children. As a widow in colonial America she retained a part ownership in the land "for life" that was why she signed the deed. Read the attached sources, Frances as administratrix of William Adams, and also source where Richard Routt and Frances (Adams) Routt were finalizing the administration of William Adams' estate. Also the source on "Widow's Dower" is valuable as to why the widow signed away her legal right to the land John Adams/Katherine Napier were selling. This John Adams bloodline is from my mother's ancestry. My father's ancestor, Gabriel Adams of Fairfax, VA, is also now wrong per 5 male Adams descendants (one my brother) as noted on attached DNA chart (only three are public). Now to try to "correct" Gabriel's bloodline! The parish word "Truro" of old Stafford, Va, is the biggest written clue we have. Gabriel Adams was one of the first vestrymen when this parish was named in Stafford, VA... is it possible it was named after Truro, Cornwall, England? Oh, I love "hack and mash!" may I borrow the phrase? Well, my phrase in genealogy ... "the journey continues..."
Hi Private User
I am impressed with your research and agree with so much, especially the Northumberland origin. I spent the last couple of days on Frances actually, and there’s no question to me that she was William Adam’s Widow and married Richard Routt next.
My question is how she’s the mother of John of Hunting Creek. She was having Routt children in the 1670s
And died it looks like 1716. To have been the mother of John, she would need to have been born say 1630. Isn’t that rather a stretch?

GENETIC FAMILY 023: Kit #38578 Adams; John Adams, b.c. 1650, Fairfax, Northumberland, VA (England) R-M 269, numerous others in Family 023
Has both the 1st William & the 1st John “Francis” listed.
Erica, THANKS SO MUCH for this excellent analysis! Yes, I had to put into WikiTree profile as I was documenting the early Northumberland, VA, microfilm records for John Frances Adams a birth date for him, which I added 1647 as many genealogy have, therefore in order to place Frances Adams, widow, into WikiTree I has to enter a birthdate, otherwise the system won't accept, therefore I subtracted 17 years from 1647 and arrived at 1630. And you are right "spot on!" 1630 is inaccurate, for her Routt children born late 1670's (1679 still listed in court records as Frances Adams, widow) then Routt children born 1680s or later.
Many genealogies have Richard Routt as marrying Frances Adams, Oct 1687, but this was the COURT DATE not the marriage date, for they both appeared in court due to a lawsuit of unpaid bill of William Adams, dec'd, 1st husband, owed to Saml. Tipton. They could have married as early as 1680 per court records for Frances Adams. Obviously, as you so expertly analyzed, her birthdate was likely much later, having children in the 1680 to 1690 range. Taking 1690, if age 45 having last child (maximum age!) then her birthdate 1645!! If age 40, then birthdate was ca 1650.
HERE IS THE CRUX OF THE ISSUE OF BIRTHDATES: WAS JOHN francis ADAMS (don't like undocumented "francis" name) REALLY BORN 1647????? NO RECORD EXISTS ANYWHERE I'VE REVIEWED. There is this court record that will help.
Located a Northumberland, Va, abstracted court record (taken from microfilm records of court orders) VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS, SERIES 2, V.1, Northumberland Co., VA, Court Orders 1678-1713, Order Bk 4: 37-38, Image 19: Tithables List for June 1679. William Adams, father of John and husband of Frances Adams, died 1677 per court records, therefore he DEFINITELY would not be on the tithable list age 21 or older, he was dead. Those left was Thomas Adams, the bachelor, and likely older generation than William Adams, but definitely related.(more records needed) and son John Francis Adams, the son of William and Frances Adams.
In 1679 (tithable list, males 21 years and older) if born 1647, John was age 32 and should have been listed as tithable over age 21. JOHN FRANCIS ADAMS WAS NOT LISTED ON THE TITHABLE LIST FOR 1679! ONLY THOMAS ADAMS WAS LISTED, along with many of their neighbors living on Chicacoan Mill Stream, Jas Nipper, (likely father of Katherine Nipper) John Oldham (appraised estate of Wm Adams) Richd Routt (2nd husband) Tho Shirley ( bro. John bought the Adams land 1702) Wm Taylor (sold land to Wm Adams 1670), Tho Towers, Cloud Tullos (listed on land records with Adams's). Most of these neighbors had land adjoining Thomas & William Adams. JOHN FRANCIS ADAMS WAS NOT LISTED, FOR HE WAS NOT YET AGE 21.
If John was born 1658, he would have been age 21 in 1679 and listed along with Thomas Adams. He was not listed, therefore John Francis Adams was born 1659 or later, using this 1679 tithables list for Northumberland County, VA. His mother, Frances Adams, was definitely living there at this 1679 year, for that was the last Court Entry where she "quit" the Estate of her dec'd husband, William Adams.
Frances Adams Routt at maximum birthing of children age 40-45, up to the year 1690, then her birthdate would have been 1645-1650. William Adams bought his land 1670 and died 1677. If William was approx. Frances age, he was age 20-25 when he bought the land... more logical than in their 40s... and this age for William also being an younger generation than (likely relative) Thomas Adams, who definitely appears in Northumberland, VA, records early 1753-55 timeframe, Thomas being the bachelor, and not father of William Adams, was the older Adams generation.
John Francis Adams, b. 1660-1665, he would be age 24-29 when he first appeared in the Northumberland, VA, court records, appointed as Constalbe in 1689. His children with Katherine Nipper was starting to be born at this late 1680s timeframe.
William Adams b. ca 1645-50, Frances Adams b. ca 1645-50. Relative Thomas Adams and a John Adams had transportation record here (Cavaliers & Pioneers) dated 1653. Transported immigrants usually arrive a few years prior to the colonial government recording the land grant records (Cavaliers & Pioneers, VA Land Grants)
PLEASE, PLEASE, tell me if this makes ANY sense!!! For the birth ages are SURELY wrong presently on genealogy files and websites! THANK MUCH FOR ALL HELP AND ANALYSES!!
Northumberland, VA, Court Orders Bk 4: 37-38, Image 19, Court Record 2 June 1679:
Tithables Listed on Northumberland, VA, Tithable List: only Thomas Adams, Court Record 7 June 1679 ( https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015040790241;view=1up;... )
James Adams, son of John Adams Sr/Katherine Nipper/Napier, has a Northumberland, VA, document (FHL microfilm) where he signed his parents 1701/2 deed selling land to John Shirley. Please check record at WikiTree: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-37255
I've located records on the births of 4 children of Richard Routt and widow Frances Adams. In the Northumberland Co. book there were only pieces of three named births of Adams with NO year available due to torn record pages. Only one of these had John as father and the child is not on any genealogy list. I believe the Adams births listed on genealogy files these past two decades have been guesstimations due to no birth records showing any dates.. I saw on Ancestry an Adams compilation on Gabriel Adams of Fairfax, VA, last year that stated he had over 300 brothers and over 100 sisters!! NO JOKE!! This prompted my brother to do a YDNA test!!! WOW, been on this all day, already 11 p.m.! Will add birth records/source tomorrow!
This profile has been "locked" as a Master Profile almost the day I sent a message to Erica Howton for her to review the PRIMARY SOURCE RECORDS of Northumberland County, VA, for the ADAMS/ROUTT BLOODLINES. WHY LOCKED SO EARLY?? ALL GENI Adams/Routt connections were also "locked" immediately! I could not even add James Adams as son of John Francis Adams (also locked immediately) per records. IS GENI not open to new records which prove ADAMS RELATIONSHIPS in Northumberland County via primary source image records??
FRANCES (unknown maiden) ADAMS, widow of William Adams, per records WAS DEFINITELY the mother of John Francis Adams, Sr/ who married Katherine Nipper/Napier. THIS WAS PROVEN BY THE RECORD where she relinquished as his MOTHER her lifetime legal rights to the land of her 1st husband William Adams that son John Adams had inherited and was selling via the primogeniture laws of colonial VA Her birthdate here WAS 1653 NOW CHANGED to 1656, which MOST ancestry files have her born BEFORE 1650, SAME AS BOTH OF HER HUSBANDS. Her birth was likely born by 1650 (ancestry files) and she would have been in the procreation stage to be the mother of John Francis Adams, Sr. and well as all of her Routt children, lastly George Routt b. 1692 with 2nd husband Richard Routt. As this profile states she was b. 1656 and was 36 years old when George Route was born, and she went through menipause at age 36 for she had no more children... not likely, she was older. This event occurs in late 40s. Many women had children up through mid-40s! She was born before 1650, likely about 1647. Richard Routt was b. 1640-42 on many files. GENI IS RULING OUT COMPLETELY ALL OF THE NEW RESEARCH ADDED TO WIKITREE PROVING JOHN FRANCIS ADAMS, SR. AS SON.!! IF GENI stays with "OLD" genealogy files/records (like John Francis Adams b. 1647!!!! wrong per primary source records) then there is no point to add ancestral generations to Geni! THE NORTHUMBERLAND, VA, RECORDS on WikiTree PROVE the ADAMS descendency, via FamilySearch FHL microfilm and archive abstracts and images. JUST BECAUSE OTHER GENEALOGY FILES DO NOT HAVE THE PRIMARY SOURCE RECORDS DOES NOT NEGATE THE VALIDITY OF THE SOURCES! WHY WERE THESE PROFILES "LOCKED" IMMEDIATELY, BEFORE MEMBERS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO EVEN REVIEW THE NEW RESEARCH? As a researcher, I always strive to prove familial relationships, and let the RECORDS PROVE ANCESTRY, (plus our Adams y-dna) NOT OPINIONS OR GUESSES. Please review John Francis Adams, Sr. at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-3100
I was trying to prevent wrong parents being attached, Private User
Unfortunately the relationship lock tool is not specific to parent relationships only.
So I’m trying another solution for you - unknown parents (for now).
The curator note reads:
Please ask any curator if a relationship unlock is needed. There are so many Adams families !
And the “about” Links to William Adams, Jr. as his possible identity.
Sorry for any distress caused, and hopefully this solution will work better for you.
Yes, Erica, after 40 years of researching my Adams bloodlines (John Adams/Katherine Nipper/Napier) and now a different line of mine (Gabriel Adams/Priscilla Pearson) which early research and HUNDREDS of files have as father/son, now proven wrong by my brother's and 4 other Adams male descendants, I have worked extremely hard this past year to correct this Adams "mess" of early VA, as Curator and extremely knowledgeable of which you are VERY WELL AWARE! And I'm sure you would be just as concerned if mistakes/corrections for your Howton line were not made within an appropriate amount of time based on your research. When other members have had time to review (several months) and do not object to new research, or provide evidence to the contrary, at what point does Geni curator(s) add the parents, per the many records I see you have attached (THANK YOU) supporting the Adams/Routt ancestry per Northumberland, VA, primary source records?
Erica, I have made the connections calls to the parents with the extant primary source records of Northumberland, Virginia, which can also be viewed at Wikitree John Francis Adams, Sr. profile. With "locked" profiles on Geni, obviously the research is taken out of the hands of members no matter how many sources are attached. The Wikitree profile has 21 sources attached proving the parentage. The oldest 1600 Adams bloodlines of VA are now being revised with new y-dna and primary source images from FamilySearch microfilm. The Wikitree profile has 21 sources attached proving the parentage of my ancestor: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-3100.
Erica, for profile John Adams, of Hunting Creek, I have added to the Overview on the profile page the appropriate Geni links to parents already listed in Geni and the WikiTree links of both with appropriate notes:
William Adams, Jr. ( William Adams, Jr. )
Frances Routt (unknown) ( Frances Routt )
I also added the appropriate links on William Adams, Jr. and Frances Routt (unknown) in the Overview of each profile the data on John Adams, of Hunting Creek, with a link to the Geni profile and WikiTree profile as well.
Due to being "locked" profiles, please unlock and attach the above parents to John Adams, of Hunting Creek.
THANK YOU for all your efforts in adding this recent research on the Adams/Routt genealogies.
