As reported in the "Rutherfordian Spectator" on the 27th of September, 1834, Peter Stroud Jr. was shot and killed by his son-in-law, John Garret, on 22 September 1834. It was reported that Peter Stroud had assumed the responsibility for payment of debts created by one of his sons who had left the state. When Garret presented his note for payment, Stroud said it was a forgery and refused to pay it. Garret was found guilty of murder by the Rutherford Superior Court and sentenced to be hung on the second Friday of December, 1835.
Peter Stroud Jr. was the son of Peter Stroud Sr. of Muddy Creek, Burke County, North Carolina and brother of Jesse Stroud (1758 - 1834).
