Thomas Barber (1771-1843) - famous British portrait painter - dies in UK - supposedly South African Progenitor?

x July 15 1793, Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield England, Elizabeth Barber (d 1854)?? cf Anna Elizabeth Barber Bateman

x June 9 1795, Saint Nicholas, Nottingham England, Mary Atherston (d1825, UK) ?? cf Mary Barber

Marriage records for both these marriages - Different Thomas Barber?
What is the South African connection?

I think the SA connection is that he is an ancestor of David Hilton-Barber David Atherstone Hilton-Barber

Note the error message Consistency Check:Tana Hilton-Barber born after her marriage date. This is wrong as I have checked, but message won't disappear.

Regarding David H-B, he recently wrote a short book "The Saint, the Surgeon and the unsung Botanist" published by Footprints Press https://www.footprintspress.com/?page_id=245 ISBN 978-0-620-71244-6. Thomas Barber is briefly described on page 98 but with dates (1741-1883). The latter date conflicts with his text saying "... in 1873, 50 years after his death, ....." This means he died in 1833, but who knows.

There are many other errors in dates in this book, too numerous to compile.

Marriage date error was because the year was entered as 56, not 1956.

Missed that detail - thank you!

cf Hugh Atherstone, Snr (father of the 1820 settler,
Dr. John Atherstone SV/PROG) whose portrait was apparently painted by Thomas Barber:

" Hugh Atherstone is the direct ancestor of all the Atherstones in Africa. He, in company with his two brothers, owned a cloth-dyeing business. He lived in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham, and was highly respected and well-known citizen. His portrait was painted by Thomas Barber.

Hugh Atherstone, 1743 Higham-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire bur. Ockbrook, Derbyshire 1819 married Ann Green and had a family of 15, most of whom were baptised at St. Nicholas, Nottingham http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SOUTH-AFRICA/2003-10/...;

Hugh Atherstone, Snr is apparently also the father of Mary Barber - who is the wife of Thomas Barber.

It would make sense of the painter painted his father in law.

Mary Barber's son, Hugh Atherstone Barber dies in Craddock.

Of Frederick William Barber (another son of Son of Thomas Barber and Mary Atherstone Barber - and brother of Hugh Atherstone Barber) - it says "Immigration: with cousin Dr William Guybon Atherstone - 1839 - Highlands, South Africa"

10/13/2018 at 11:18 AM

Dr William Guybon Atherstone, MD, MLC, FGS, FRCS. is, however, 5 years old when he emigrates with his parents (Dr. John Atherstone SV/PROG and Elizabeth Damant Atherstone, SM/PROG )

So, I'd say that it is pretty certain that the painter Thomas Barber is the father of the SA Barber settlers: Hugh Atherston Barber & Fredrick William Barber (Sons of Mary Atherstone, whose brothers, Dr John Atherstone & Hugh Atherstone both have SA settler descendants too)

and that this marriage x July 15 1793, Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield England to Elizabeth Barber (d 1854) must be another Thomas Barber entirely.

This is indeed valuable research Sharon.
Can I now look at that part of the tree as more or less finalized?
Once you are confident that is the last word, how can I inform David Hilton-Barber as I think he may want to know in case he revises his short book. I had not informed him of all the errors I saw, based on date conflicts for many people he wrote about where it was obvious two dates were different or did not add up. In the spirit of trying to clean up the record I may have to tackle this.
How is the best way to send him a summary of your investigation?
