In example above an actual family member created a profile for her relative in 2012.
Only when merging with a new 2018 profile, which is incorrectly spelled, not only is the incorrect data picked for the main profile but the creator of more recent/duplicate/incorrect profile is also made primary manager
Here's another one:

When I merged the original profile created by a relative in 2012 with an incomplete profile created in 2018 - the creator of the most recent profile was made primary manager
Private
There's a whole series of factors and I probably can't remember them all while I'm sitting in the booth at a conference right now, but some of them include:
- claimed vs unclaimed; claimed takes priority
- MP vs non; MP takes priority
- Multiple managers vs. single manager; multiple takes priority
- single manager vs single manager; more-complete profile takes priority
- single managers, same completeness; the order in which you drop determines priority
I believe there are more. I'll have to give some thought to why we don't use creation date as a tie-breaker, or review the code to see if maybe we do. Unfortunately I won't have time to do that while I'm at the conference this week.
Simon Goodman -- Geni did NOT choose the wrong Profile as Primary - it chose the Profile with an active manager. The other manager, in both cases, shows as "Abandoned Tree" (as shown if click 'Actions' on their profile).
[and the choice is one - I believe - Geni does not mix-and-match Primary Manager and Primary Profile]
-- What is more, simply because someone added data first does not at all mean they had the more correct info. Being more closely related - that does suggest it -- BUT a) anyone can make a typo and b) unless immediate family, they may well not have had actual correct info, and the other person may have done more research.
So I do not think it is accurate to say "When merging Geni picks incorrect profile/data for main profile " -- Geni has to make an arbitrary choice, and it is up to the person doing the merging, and the folks managing and/or interested in the profile, to research and decide what the correct data actually is. (And it would certainly be nice if they would document the reason for their choice.)
Geni shows both versions in the Compare Profiles Screen - along with which will be Primary, before the merge is approved, so if you do not like the choice, you can choose not to complete the merge.
And, although it only shows one version on the profile, it keeps both (all) in the Data Conflict Screen until somebody actually chooses which is correct -- AND, hopefully permanently, it keeps both in the 'View Merge Screen'
