I always thought it was done upon immigration but clearly the ship manifest shows that may not be true.

Some of the records I have from mom show that it was changed in England after coming from Poland. I think the wedding info in England reflected Miller....Manifest from England to NY shows Miller, I think. will research more in stuff I have.....

Apparently, the Michanarsky name recorded by immigration may have also been incorrect because there's reference to a cousin by the name of Michnowski, which is what my dad had said the name had been.

Also, I didn't know they were married in England

BTW, who is the "Lubin" that posted the ship's manifest? I vaguely remember relatives by that name (I think) but I have no idea who and how they are related.

According to a letter dated July 15, 1986 that Uncle Harry sent to my parents - along with a 7-page booklet he created labelled 'The Miller Family' - our grandparents Joseph and Sadie, were married in Loatndon's East End on August 18, 1907. According to research that a friend and I did, there is a list of Marriage Certificates applied for under Joseph Miller and Sadie Lotrowski in London August 1907, He may not have legally changed his name but he was using Miller (a good English name, as is Morley). Uncle Harry says the name was Michnofsky which is close enough to Michanarsky, when translated/tansliterated from Yiddish/Polish. I have a picture of Grandpa taken in London 1906 - it says his name was Molefsky but that is probably wrong as it also says he is Age 19 years and he would have been about 23 at that time.

BTW - Lois Lubin is my friend who got me on Geni. Because I am typing-impaired and technologically challenged, she has been posting for me at my direction (mostly my mother's side) under my name, and occasionally posted some on her own under her name.
