Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, was a Flemish king. Born in Ghent, he was the first ruler of a global empire. It was with Flemish connections, particularly in Antwerp, that he extended and exercised his power. The De Haro family—Christopher de Haro particularly— were linked to the Fugger bankers and financiers who helped finance Charles V.
