Uchtred FitzWaltheof, Lord of Tynedale - Is Uchtred fitzWaltheof actually the son of Waltheof? Please discuss.

We have been going back and forth with attaching Uchtred fitzWaltheof to a father Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria. (Hard date: Waltheof was executed in 1076.)

I think what is happening is that we have some Uchtreds mixed up, and am starting a public discussion so that we have an record of this to refer to.

According to MedLands, Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria, DID have a son named Uchtred, but that son, murdered in 1016, was married to Ecgfrida the daughter of Aldun the bishop of Durham, and then next married to Sigen the daughter of Styr.

So, not this Uchtred. THIS Uchtred is married to Matilda of Huntingdon, and therefore her brother. But she wasn't married to an Uchtred at all; she was married to Simon de Senlis and David, King of Scots. So that connection needs to get detached.

The other marriage this Uchtred has is to Bethoc, the daughter of Donald Bane, King of Scotland, and she DID marry an Uchtred! Yay!

She married Uchtred of Tyndale, the first known in his line. The Pipe Roll of 1130 does say that his father's name was Waltheow. However, that that guy was the Earl of Northumbria isn't clear.

So I propose that we do give this Uchtred a father named Waltheow, and explain the problems in the Overview and Curator Notes.

Unless someone has reliable evidence that Waltheow the father of Uchtred and Waltheow the Earl of Northumbria are the same!

I haven't seen it yet but perhaps it is there.
