There are a few things wrong with this family
1) Elizabeth SMITH had children to both FUGATE and SERGENT between 1838 and 1846
2) Martin FULGATE was only 10 when his first child was born
I have reversed this merge https://www.geni.com/merge/view?revision_id=71056647010 which merged these two
* Elizabeth Fugate born 1822 married to Martin FUGATE
* Elizabeth M. Sergent born 1824 married to Baylis SERGENT
These merges on Martin FULGATE give different birthdates

From interview with noted Breathitt County genealogist and historian, Stephen Bowling 3/28/2006: Mary Polly Fugate, wife of “Doctor” Moses Clemons, was daughter of “Big Mart” Fugate - Martin Fugate and Elizabeth Betty Smith. This was told to Stephen by James Carl Combs who was the son of Hager and Dovie Clemons Combs. All other information given to Stephen by James Combs has proven correct.
Martin Fugate’s mother Haney Noble was full blooded Cherokee from Tennessee, born in VA. With Moses grandmother, Mary Wells being Native American-Cherokee this accounts for the strong Native American features and habits in Moses and Mary Fugate Clemons children.
Gabriel Ritchie, born March 3, 1835, the son of James & Hannah (Fugate) Ritchie, married Polly Fugate, daughter of Andrew Fugte Sr and Mary Polly Napier Fugate. This Polly Fugate obviously was not Mary Polly as these census records show.

According to FamilySearch.org, the husband of Elizabeth 'Betty' Smith "may have been and orphan from France" (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LDML-43V) ... but other say he was born in KY and his parents were from France. (Currently he is separated as Martin ? 'blue' Fugate )
The "blue" nickname has to do with a recessive gene for a bluish skin color.
So that 'blue' Martin is the husband of Elizabeth Smith, dau. of Richard Smith & Nancy Ellicia Combs, then who is the Smith woman that married the son of Levi Fugate & Haney Noble? (That non-'blue' Martin is currently Martin Fugate).
I don't know if this will help or not

It has Elizabeth SMITH (a carrier of Methemoglobinemia) - daughter of Richard SMITH (carrier) and Alicia COMBS) married Martin FUGATE (not blue)

Levi b. 1795 Russell Co. VA; d. 18 Oct 1874, Perry Co. KY. Lived in Claiborne Co., TN as a young man (Martin was born there); moved to Perry Co. about 1840, lived briefly in Laurel Co. KY near his brother Martin, then went back to Perry Co. by 1850; in Breathitt Co. 1870. Served in War of 1812 and received bounty land for that service. Wife Haney, whom he married while in TN said to have been a Cherokee Indian; also m. Margaret, wid of James Raleigh, in Apr 1856. I have published the bounty land application as well as tax & deed records for Levi. He was son of William (d. 1808/9 Russell Co. VA) and Jane of Lee Co. VA and Claiborne Co. TN. William one of the Moccasin Creek brothers, son of Martin, who was son of Josias (d. 1757 King George Co. VA)10
Levi & Haney moved from Claiborne Co, TN, to KY, about 1830 according to the tax lists 9

Mary Fugate Posted: 8 Sep 2003 11:45AM To Fugate Family Forum
For the record: Levi, b. 1795, was the son of William Fugate and his wife Jane. They lived first in Russell Co. VA, then on the border of Lee Co. VA and Claiborne Co. TN. William died in Russell Co. VA in 1809, and his children either went back to TN (the older ones) or lived with their uncle Zachariah in Russell Co. until they were old enough to leave.
William was, through this connection to Zachariah, therefore a son of the Martin who died in Russell Co. in 1802, wife unknown. And that Martin would have been the son of Josias named in his will in 1757.
And that, unless someone is sitting on some record that I have not heard of, is the end of that line. There is no record to connect Josias to the Maryland family, and several reasons why he doesn't seem to fit....
Levi had a son named Martin, born 1820 in Claiborne Co., TN. This Martin married Elizabeth Smith in 1840 in Perry Co. KY, and is apparently the one that was mis-identified as a frenchman. That Martin carried no "blue" genes, but his wife Elizabeth did - she was a daughter of Richard Smith and Alicia Combs whose children and grandchildren seem to have spread the "blue" trait among their descendants as they intermarried with the descendants of another Martin Fugate, b. ca1783, son of Benjamin, who came to KY from Russell Co. VA around 1800. That Martin's wife Mary was apparently the "carrier", since none of Martin's siblings had blue descendants. But Martin & Mary's son, Zachariah, married a younger Smith sister, thus doubling the chances for the "blue" trait in that family.
Levi was a nephew of Benjamin - first cousin of Martin (b.1783).
Military: He fought in the War of 1812, enlisting from Russell Co., but is recorded after that in Claiborne Co. TN with his brother Martin.
Levi married Haney NOBLE1, F.
They had the following children:
2 i. Martin (Big Mart), M (1820-1900)
ii. (Susan?), F (~1822-)
iii. Mary Jane, F (1824-1866)
iv. Henley (Claiborne Co), M (1822-1882)
v. Levi, M (1829-1865)
vi. Sarah, F (1831-)
vii. William, M (1832-)
5. Haney NOBLE1, F. Born in 1790 in Virgina.9 Haney died in Breathitt Co Ky, in 1850; she was 60.9 Race: Full or Half Blood Native American : Cherokee of the “Blue Tribe of Cherokee” .10,8
From Dozens of Cousins:
Haney Noble 1790VA, of Cherokee Indian ancestry, referred to as the "Blue Tribe of the Cherokees"
Race: Native American : Cherokee. REFN: 6488
Haney, was of Cherokee decent. Her last name of Noble is probably not true, but she was probably Cherokee Indian (part or whole)11
Came to Perry Co, Ky about 1825 from Claiborne Co, TN8

Levi Fugate b.1795 in Russell County, VA and d. October 18, 1874 in Perry County, KY and Haney ?. Haney was Levi's first wife. His second wife was Margaret Raleigh, he married her in April 1856. Levi lived in Claiborne County, TN as a young man. He served in the War of 1812 and received bounty land for that service. Levi married his wife Haney, who is said to have been a Cherokee Indian, while he resided in TN. He moved to Perry County about 1840. Levi lived briefly in Laurel County, KY near his brother Martin, then moved back to Perry County by 1850. In 1856, Levi married Margaret, widow of James Raleigh. He was in Breathitt county in 1870.

6. Rev. Richard SMITH8,12, M, son of Lt William B SMITH, M (1740-Oct 10, 1777) & Elizabeth Betty (Eunice) RITCHIE, F (1743-1816). Born on Mar 6, 1771.1 Richard died on Nov 28, 1836; he was 65.1
He was a primative Baptist Preacher for 45 years. Sam Smith family has his bible with Smith Births and Death records dating back to 1816. He was said to have delivered hell fire sermons and after the service was over would be seen sneaking out back and taking a swig of his whiskey.
According to County Court Records of Owsley Co. Ky. His brother John was appointed guardianship of him there early. He is believed to have first lived in Owsley Co. before going to Perry Co. A estate auction in Owsley show that Richard Smith purchased the Family Bible of John's.......
After the death of William, Richard and John moved to the unsettled land of Kentucky. They left their mother in Virginia to handle the plantations which were left by their father.
Some say Richard came to Perry Co. Ky by way of Pound Gap, about 1792.
He first settled in Lotts Creek area before moving to Pigeon Roost on Troublesome Creek at Ary.
According to Henry P. Scalf in his book, "Kentucky, Last Frontier," Richard owned 38.577 acres of land in 1796 through Eastern Land Titles.

Richard SMITH, born 15 May 1771, died 28 Nov 1836, Troublesome Creek, Perry Co, KY; both buried at Old Smith Graveyard on Troublesome Creek.
Elitia is documented as a daughter of Nicholas by the Dickey Diary Interview of Margaret Combs Lewis and others; however, there is some question, due to her age, and death record as to whether she might have been Nicholas' step-daughter, rather than daughter. Although Elitia's tombstone states she was b 20 Jun 1772, she may, however, be the Elisha whom the 1850 Perry Co, KY census lists as born 1780, the 1840 as b 1770-1780; and in the HH of Richard SMITH: the 1830 Perry as b 1770-1780, the 1820 Clay as b 1776-1794, and the 1810 Clay as b 1784-1794. Just a short note about my William Fugate:
. WILLIAM4 FUGATE (MARTIN3, JOSIAS was born Abt. 1760/1, and died 1808 in Russell Co. Virginia.  He married (1) UNK  There is a death record for Julia Fugate in Lee Co VA 1865 that states that her parents were William Fugate and Sarah Stevens. Some believe her name to be Sarah Jane Stevens.  This could mean that Jane died and he married again, or that or that his wife was named Sarah Jane.  No one can find a record of a Stevens’s family in any of the tax list or other records available in the area where William Fugate lived. Â
William Fugate Story
He was probable born in Frederick County, Virginia about 1785, And accompanied other family members to southwestern Virginia. He followed the lead of his elder brother and crossed the Clinch Mountain to settle on Moccasin Creek in what became Russell County, Virginia. He received a survey for seventy five Acres of land in Washington County 'on west side of Moccasin Creek, north branch of Copper Creek on 22 Apr 1782 (Washington County Survey Books 1781-1797, p. 315). William Fugate appears on the tax list for Washington County in 1782 in another district from his brothers Benjamin and Zachariah, but not on the lists from 1783 to 1786. He signed a petition; for the formation of Russell County in 1785 and appears in the Russell County tax lists from 1787 to 1796. William Fugate purchased ninety four acres of land (adjoining the land of his brother Zachariah on Moccasin Creek) by a patent dated 26 Sep 1796.'
Robert Tate sued William Fugate in Russell County Court in June 1787. In
September 1787 the jury found William Fugate guilty, he was to pay damages & costs.
William Fugate 'for his insolent behavior in court and gave bond and surety for his good
Behavior for one year & penalty. The Commonwealth sued William Fugate & Joseph
Tate in September 1795 and dismissed the case in May 1797. William Fugate sued
William Tate in November 1795, also dismissed William Fugate sued Carrington
Wheeler in February 1797, and received a judgment against him. The last court entry
Concerning the dispute with Carrington Wheeler was in November 1798.
Records in Lee County Virginia and Claiborne County, Tennessee
William & Jane Fugate were of Lee County, Virginia on 25 Jul 1797 when they sold
Their land on Moccasin Creek to Giles & Rachel Lee (Russell County Deed Book
2:367). William Fugate appears on the Lee County personal property tax Lists from
I802 though 1806. William Fugate purchased 200 acres on the northeast side of
The Powell River in Lee County from Harden Williams on 6 Aug 1804. William
Fugate and William Allen of Lee County, Virginia sold 17 acres of land in Claiborne
County to John Parrot of Claiborne County on 8 Aug 1804 (Claiborne County Deed
Book A). This land was described as being beside Parrot's land and Fugate's land
and one boundary was the Virginia-Tennessee state line. At some subsequent time,
William and his family appear to have returned to Russell County, Virginia.
During the lifetime of William Fugate the name of his wife was recorded but once
as Jane in the deed of 1797. No contemporary record of the names of their children
has been found. It is evident that William had a number of children who appear in
the Claiborne County and Russell County records. The oldest son was Martin
Fugate whose death record in Rockcastle County, Kentucky gives his parents as
John and Jane Fugate. Â As there was no John Fugate with a wife Jane in Russell
County it is evident that 'John' was an error for William. Associated with Martin
Fugate in Virginia and Claiborne County, Tennessee were two other probably sons,
Levi and William Fugate. These men, Martin, Levi and William, appear to have left
Russell County to reside in Claiborne County, Martin in 1810, Levi and William somewhat later.
* Referred to in Russell County Deed Book 2:367. This land was later sold to
William's Brother Colbert.
There is in addition evidence that there were younger children as
William’s brother, Zachariah, who was the administrator of his estate, had residing with
him in 1820 two young men and one girl who were not his children two of them
Appear to be the Zachariah Fugate (born about 1801) who had his own household in
Russell County in 1830 and Julia (born about 1805). At Julia’s death in Lee County
on 6 Jul 1865 she was reported by her family as aged 60 and born in Claiborne
County to William k and Sarah (Stevens) Fugate. Julia is then the 'infant child
mentioned in the settlement of William's estate in 1811 as having required care for
three years before William's death in 1808. Her mother, Sarah (Stevens) Fugate,
Appears to have been still living at William's death as a Sarah Fugate is recorded
Subsequently at the sale of the property of John Williams (for whom Zachariah
Fugate was also administrator). It is not known if she had been known previously as Jane
or if William had two wives’
Death and Administration of Estate
William Fugate died sometime before March 1808 when his brother, Zachariah
Fugate, was granted letters of administration for his estate in Russell County,
Virginia. The inventory of the estate of William Fugate was made on 4 Jul 1809
(Russell County Will Book 2:194). The inventory of the estate included the sale of
Property to his brother) Zachariah Fugate (the principal purchaser with five knives

The Fugate Family of Russell Co., Virginia by Dr. David Faris, Gateway Press, Baltimore, Maryland - Published 1986. (For a more detailed information, refer to the book published by Dr. David Faris)
Reference use only pg. 29 - (William Fugate was born in Frederick County, Virginia), Abt. 1765, and accompanied other family members to southwestern Virginia. He followed the lead of his elder brothers and (crossed the Clinch Mountain) to settle on (Moccasin Creek) in what became Russell County, Virginia. He received 75 Acres of land in Washington County on the west side of Molls Creek, north branch of Copper Creek on April 22, 1782. (Washington County Survey Books 1781-1797, Page 315).
William Fugate is on the tax list for Washington County in 1782. William purchased 94 Acres of land (adjoining the land of his brother Zachariah) on Moccasin Creek by a patent dated September 26, 1796.
LITIGATION: Robert Tate sued William Fugate in Russell County Court in June 1787. September 1787 William Fugate had to pay damages & costs. "The Commonwealth" sued William Fugate & Joseph Tate in September 1795, also dismissed. William Fugate sued Carrington Wheeler in February 1797, and received judgment against him. The last court entry concerning the dispute with Carrington Wheeler was in November 1798.
RECORDS: Lee County, Virginia and Clairborne County, Tennessee. William and Jane Fugate were of Lee County, Virginia on July 25, 1797 when they sold their land on Moccasin Creek to Giles and Rachel Lee (Russel County Deed Book 2:367). Old Giles Lee : The old Giles Lee bought 94 acres from William Fugate and his wife Jane, of Lee Co., VA, on 25 July 1797. This land was in Moccasin Valley on Moll's Creek. Deed Book 2, page 537, Russell Co., VA, Giles Lee and his wife Rachael on 28 August 1798, sell to Colbet Fugate, 50 acres being part of the above tract bought of William Fugate. Deed Book 2, page 245, Russell Co., VA, 28 May 1809 Giles Lee and Sarah, sell to Colbert Fugate, another 15 acres part of the William Fugate tract. Deed Book 5, page 43 - Russell Co., VA, 5 April 1814, Giles Lee sells to Colbert Fugate, 29 acres being the remaining part of the 94 acres of William Fugate tract. In 1803, Giles Lee and his wife, Sarah were dismissed from the Stoney Creek Baptist Church (Fort Blackmore). In 1798 he had wife "Rachael" and in 1803 and 1809 he has wife "Sarah" which means Rachael died sometime between 1798 and 1809. Deed Book 2, page 436, 26 September 1797, Giles Lee sells to William Sergeant 50 acres in Glade Hollow, being land patented to Cornelius Roberts, in 1787, Roberts was killed by Indians on Black Mountain in 1788. On November 3, 1817, Giles Lee buys from Briant Fannin and wife Rachael 5 acres of land on Castle Run, bordering Daniel McKinney's land. Then on November 13, 1817, just ten days later the death of Giles Lee is recorded in the Bible of James Lee. James Lee named a son Giles and old Giles Lee's death is recorded in his Bible. His son Giles was killed in 1863. So this possibly shows a brother or father and son relation.
LAND PURCHASE: William Fugate purchased 200 Acres on the (Northeast side of the Powell River in Lee County Virginia from Harden Williams on August 6, 1804). William Fugate and William Allen of Lee County, Virginia sold 17 Acres of land in Claiborne County to John Parrot of Clairborne County on August 8, 1804 (Claiborne County Deed Book A). The land was described as being beside "Parrot's Land and Fugate's Land" and one boundary was the Virginia-Tennessee state line. At some subsequent time, William and his family appear to have returned to Russell County, Virginia.
MARRIAGE & CHILDREN: William Fugate and his wife was recorded once as Jane in the deed of 1797. No record of the names of their children has been found. William had a number of children who appear in the Clairborne County and Russell County records.
DEATH & ADMINISTRATION OF ESTATE: William Fugate died sometime before March 1808 when his brother, Zachariah Fugate, was granted letters of Administration on his estate in Russell County, Virginia. The inventory of the estate of William Fugate was made on July 4, 1809, (Russell County Will book 2:194). The inventory of the estate included the (Sale of Property to his brother Zachariah Fugate) the Principal purchaser with five knives and forks, one bible, five spoons and four basins, six plates, one dish, four blankets, one clock, one hat, two shirts, one mare, one hand saw, one bed, one foot adz, chissel & Auger, and one pair ot hooks, his (son Martin Fugate, Jr. one bible, wearing clothes, Benjamin Fugate six plates, one bed and one grey mare, John Fugate one sorrel mare, John Williams one bed, one saddle, one ax, one pair pot hooks, four books, James Oveton one bed, William Hullam, one handsaw, Isaac tate one foot adz, chessel & auger, Henry Mead one slay, James McKinney one black mare, and James Hendricks one yearling colt. The final accounting of the estate of William Fugate on January 1, 1811 includes Dr. Thomas Hardy's bill for tending William for twenty dollars, and for keeping William Fugate's small infant three years for forty-five dollars (Will Book 2:233).
BURIAL - WILLIAM SR. FUGATE
I believe the Old Square Cement Coffin that is laying on top of the ground (very ancient) with cement square lids which can be easily moved off) are that of the BOTTOM RIGHT: MEMORY of W. FUGATE as I spoke with some local Fugate's and they told me that the Fugate Cemetary on Little Sycamore Valley Rd., Tazewell, TN, Claiborne County was that of quote' OLD WILLIAM SR. FUGATE which was the Spouse of SARAH JANE STEVEN my grt-grt-grt-grandparents. Some of his children are even buried here such as William JR. Fugate's wife, Nancy Riley etc; I was told that William SR. Fugate kept going back and forth between Virginia and Tazewell, TN, Claiborne County over the years. That would explain why many researchers don't know where he ended up being buried. It is known as "OLD WILLIAM K. FUGATE FARM & CEMETERY", Little Sycamore Rd., now owned by Neil Walker Family, 1 mile from John Newton Fugate in Tazewell, TN, Claiborne Co. who I got the info. from abt. it being called "Old William K. Fugate Farm & Cemetery as I called him on the telephone to inquire abt. where my ggg-grandparents where buried and lived up there. John Newton Fugate has held the "Fugate Reunion" up there over the years.

Only two records of William's wife have been found: One deed in which she was called "Jane" and the death record of William's daughter stating that her mother was "Sarah Stevens" (Jane and Sarah Stevens could have been two different people). William's wife apparently died before William did, since the children were taken in by his brother Zachariah, but she left no record at all. 2
William died in 1808 in Russsell Co Va and widow Jane & children went to Claiborne Co, Tn & lived near H??? Fugate, S/o John Zachariah.3

From my research Elizabeth had no other spouses (and many Trees lists her as spouse of various men on Ancestry.com)
This is the Primary Blue Fugate line.
I believe the gene cam from either the Wells line or the Smith line. There was much endogamy (marrying cousins). The Fugate's, Combs, Griffiths, Nobles and other families migrated into Eastern Ky in the VERY early 1800's as large related family groups. Many if not most had ancestry with the Tidewater VA native tribes, Marrying cousin was common and accepted among those of ?Native Ancestry.

A number of descendants of Martin & Mary Fugate and of Martin & Elizabeth (Smith) Fugate (and in a number of other Breathitt Co. families) have been determined to have a rare inherited blood disorder called methemoglobinemia in which some of the hemoglobin of the red blood cells exists in an abnormal form called methemoglobin which imparts a blue color to the skin, particularly after a period of exertion. The condition begins as a mutation in one individual whose children have a 50:50 chance of inheriting the new mutated gene. Individuals receiving tow genes, one from each parent, do appear 'blue'. Because of the rarity of the mutation the most likely appearance is found in those decended from the marriages of cousins. Although it is possible that the mutated gene originated with the common ancestor of the two Martins, it is much more likely that it occurred in the common ancestry of the wives of the two Martins in Kentucky.
Study of the ancestry of individuals in a number of families with methemoglobinemia show recurring common ancestry in the Ritchie family. For that reason it is likely that Mary, wife of Martin Fugate was a member of that family.
