Nagging question, was Barbara FitzRoy really the "illegitimate" daughter of the King? The website "Genie" has determined that the line of descent is true, but I hotly dispute it. Of her six children, only five were acknowledged by the King. Though Charles acknowledged the young daughter as his, but in private disavowed her. There were other's who speculated that Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield may well have been the father - the child looked a lot like the Earl - as well as the young up and coming officer Sir John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough. By 1670/71, the King was had already "tired" of Barbara Villiers, and did not care one wit about her "other" lovers. Barbara FitzRoy was born in 1672. I am staking my bet that "the child" was "fathered by Churchill. If someone can come up with another theory or a set of facts please enlighten me.
