A Curator merged Profiles I managed, of a family that is within my Max Family, with another set -- all living people, some of whom I have conversed with. Both versions being merged had the surname spelled with two 'g's.
NOTE: The Curator then changed the spelling of their last name -- from a double "g" [which is how they spell it] to a single "g" !!
When I asked why he changed the spelling (I was thinking maybe he found some documentation that showed or seemed to show them originally spelling it that way, even tho I was not aware of any), his answer was
"In Geni there are about 2000 people with the surname <with one 'g'>
There are only 90 with the surname <with two g's>
Please check the Dictionaries and you will find <with one 'g'> and not <with two 'g's> - so which way is correct?
Any way i have changed it temporarily in order to view potential merges better."
[aside: his answer had the actual name - I have put info inside < > instead - that is the only change]
To my mind, if you have a name spelled differently from how it is in reality spelled, this majorly increases the chances of a false match being made or at least suggested. I fail to see how that is a plus.
The Correct Spelling of a Name is NOT determined by how others spell their names. He in no way suggested he found any documentation that the people whose names he changed ever spelled it with one 'g'.
Should he be reported from "Report" on his Profile? Should he be reported thru a ticket to Customer Service? Or??
Or is this actually seen as acceptable Curator behavior? Or??
[I am changing it back to how it should be - do others agree that is acceptable - or??]
