Savas HadjiNikolas and HadjiYannis HadjiNikolas Families ( 1793 - 1875 )
The subjects of these families are the two sons of HadjiNikolas Fermani and their
descendants. During their lifetime they were associated with their father in conducting
the business of gathering farm products and timber resources for exportation to the
countries of Italy, Turkey and Alexandria.
Savas HadjiNikolas was the first born son of HadjiNikolas and he attracted the fame
and authority of his father. A descendent named G. Loizedies recalled his esteemed
and fearless nature. One example was an incident when HadjiSavas was traveling into
Turkish territory when there appeared before him Turkish armaments (cannons). The
commander warned him to stay away from the armaments. Instead of departing he drew
his sword and with a show of courage, charged toward the commander. The Turks
disarmed him and later gave his sword back to him after his followers apologized for him.
The spouse of HadjiSavas, Koursarou, was the daughter ofHadjiElia who was from
Lapithou, who was also decapitated in July of 1821. These two large families were united
with their marriage . By 1821, HadjiSavas had a son, Loizes, who was six years old at the
time. The second son of HadjiNikolas, HadjiYiannis, was of a good type and similar in
character and spirit as his brother HadjiSavas.
After the Turks were finished with his father, they went after HadjiSavas, but he hid and
escaped capture They say he was hiding in the small church of St. Antoniou with his brother.
The search stopped after seven years when the Turks were defeated in Russia. They
worked hard to survive during this period. The large amount of wealth that had been
accumulated during earlier times was hidden by family members. After amnesty was
declared, HadjiSavas was able to recover this wealth and purchased the homes for their
families. The money and jewels that were hidden was used to improve the families fortunes.
The families of these two sons of HadjiNikolas continued to manage these properties and
resources under the existing Turkish rule.
The first daughter of Savas, Ioustinee, having inherited much of these properties continued
in the local production and distribution of farm and woodland products. She is the direct
ancestor of the Spourdis-Harmandas families when her first born daughter , Marikou,
married Christodoulos Spourdis.
