My dad's mother, Margalit Friedmann, was tragically killed in an accident in Haifa, Israel when my father was 2 years old. We are trying to determine who her parents were.

This is what I've learned:

Born December 7, 1922, possibly in Czechoslovakia.

Arrived to the British Mandate for Palestine in November 1939.

I have her Israel ID no. (as well as that of my grandfather Moshe Bernard Friedmann my dad (living), and my dad's older brother (living)).

Died May 9, 1953 in Haifa, Israel, by a bullet from a mole trap. She was buried on May 10.

Her father's first name from cemetery records is Geza/Giza/Gaza גזה.

At the time of her death Margalit lived at the following address: 29, Habonim Street (that area of Tivon may have been called "Shikun Amal").

I recently got a 2nd-3rd cousin match (DNA) from 23andMe with a (living) man (famous economist in the UK). His father was Dov Vojtech Palan. I've built a branch of the tree for Dov. Based on what I know about Dov, combined with my DNA match, I believe one of Margalit's parents was a sibling to Dov's father. (Please see extensive "about" section on Dov's profile.)

I would love help connecting the dots between Dov's father and one of Margalit's parents, and learning the names of Margalit's parents! Thanks in advance!

Have you done your MtDNA test and had your Dad or grandfather do a Y-DNA test with FamilyTreeDNA for Y-DNA? When I had money I chose Y-DNA67 for my brother and my nearest Rowley cousin which I am most interested in.

Judy, my father has done the FTNDA mtFull Sequence, Family Finder autosomal, and Y-111 test. I've uploaded his results to Geni, MyHeritage, and GEDmatch. I've tested with FTDNA, Ancestry, and 23andMe (and have uploaded to Geni, MyHeritage, and GEDmatch). My mom has done the FTDNA mtFull Sequence and FF (so I know my mt haplogroup, too).

My dad's father passed away in 1987, long before DNA testing.

Because it's my father's mother who's the mystery, the Y-DNA will not help solve it, as that's passed only from father to son. I was hoping the mtFull Sequence would help, but it has not, thus far. My autosomal match in 23andMe is the best lead we have so far. All of his other top autosomal matches seem to be on his father's side.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Rebecca

It won't solve the problem is you look at your father's Y-DNA, but if you look at his MtDNA you will get his mother's mitochondial DNA since the son carries his mother's as well as his father's. As long as his is still alive, you have a chance with DNA.

Judy

Hi Rebecca,
Try working on Dov's family looking for any information about them that you can (follow the branches - is siblings, aunts/uncles as a lot of intermarriages occured.

- a few sources that might help are MACSE and Jewishgen.

I have similar surnames in my tree so I will look to see if I can find anything.

Leanne

Also have you checked your dads immigration records?

Judy-- Thank you for the suggestion. That's why I had my dad do the mtFull Sequence. I has not produced any fruit yet, but anything is possible.

Leanne-- 1st, thank you for completing the merge on Adina Gottesman's profile!

I've found so many records for men named Alexander Deutsch (Dov's father), that it's hard to discern if any of them are the correct one. From what I've learned from Dov's living 1st cousin, Vera Benjamin, and my DNA match with Dov's son, Ronen, I believe Alexander Deutsch was a sibling to one of Margalit's parents.

I have a replacement copy of my dad's Israeli birth certificate (which he needed for U.S. naturalization in 1976-- cool bicentennial seal on his certificate!), but no immigration records. I'll have to look for those.

I have not yet checked MACSE or JewishGen for Dov's family. Thank you for the suggestions. I have a paid JewishGen membership, but not MACSE. I know it's useful for Hungarian records, but am unsure about paying to use it, as I don't read Hungarian. Do you know if using it in Google Chrome with Google Translate would make the MACSE site usable for me?

If I could find information about Alexander/Sandor's family (self, siblings, parents), that lead me right to Margalit's parents. I'm hopeful that the answers are in one of those sites!

Hi Rebecca,

re MACSE, I don't read Hungarian - the results come back by sections - ie deaths in one list, marriages in another etc. So it is easy to tell what is in the record just from that. Dates are easy to translate just by looking. Names stay the same.

Here is a screen shot from the MACSE index https://media.geni.com/p13/2e/2b/d5/d8/53444847fc9b5f4a/death_1959-...

and here is the corresponding document https://media.geni.com/p13/9e/9c/df/cd/53444847fc8b9955/death_1959-...

and here is my description of the event - Hungarian Death Record - Johanna PREUSZMANN died 3/12/1959 Budapest (born 6/3/1880). Child of Abraham PREUSZMANN and Amalia TECHER. Wife of Gyula MARTINOVITS.

A Suggestion
One thing that I learnt a long time ago was to screen grab all the records that I came across even if they weren't my family yet - ie the birth/marriage of any with the same surname in the same location. You never know when they will suddenly intersect. Geni has an add branch functionality that you can use and you can easily attach these screen grabs onto until you find where they match (if they do).

I know this takes time but via this method I was able to link lots of my families together

Leanne

Thank you, Leanne! I will definitely look into a MACSE membership! I have already created a branch for Dov Palan with 19 people on it, plus all of Adina's extended family, after you merged her profile. I will start looking for records to attach, and will take your suggestion about screen grabbing records! Thanks for the suggestions!

Rebecca

Private User, my MACSE membership was just approved today! I'm just waiting for my payment receipt to be acknowledged :)

One thing to note about the macse membership which I am sure is listed on their site but in Hungarian. The membership is for 365 logins and if you stay on a screen for a period of time it assumes you have gone away and logs you out. Not a problem once you are aware of it.

So a tip to get the most of your membership - do lots of screenshots and record downloads (changing the file names to something like Death yy-mm-dd surname first name.) at a time

Then update geni with the details and attach the documents as this takes time that would log you out of macse.

Thank you, Leanne. After my payment was acknowledged, I did see that too late... I was noodling around on the site (using Google Chrome, which can automatically translate web pages) on a break at work yesterday. I logged in multiple times on multiple parts of the site. I will plan my research more carefully from now on, so that doesn't happen. Thanks for the great tips!

I found a person named Geza Friedmann (Marglait's father) on a last name search. he is number 20390 on this list. he was born and living in Papa, Hungary. He was born in 1886. Making him the right age to be Marglait's father.

I also found Geza Friedmann on a list of Holocaust survivors. He was born 31 Jul 1886. Also, it says he died in Muhldorf, Germany in 1944/1945.

Mikey— Thank you for searching for me... unfortunately Friedmann was Margalit’s married name. Her father’s first name from her cemetery records was Geza... but the surname is unknown. That’s my big mystery. The names connected to her are linked in my original post (her husband/my grandfather Moshe Bernard Friedmann, and her first cousin, Dov Vojtech Palan. I’ve built a small tree branch for Dov, because it’s not yet known which of Margalit’s unknown parents was a sibling to Dov’s father. Dov changed his surname to Palan from his father’s surname, Deutsch, as far as I’ve learned.

If you could find a Birth or baptism record for Marglait Friedmann, that would most likely list her maiden name. You might want to try these websites.

Here is a baptism/birth record search for Czechoslovakian records. If you could find a record that has Marglait's birth date and her father's name. That could be her.

Michael

Thank you for the suggestions and links, Mikey! She was Jewish, so I will look for birth records (rather than baptism records) for Margalit. I don't have her birth location, only the date. The first link you shared asks for the Village name (thank you, Google Chrome for translating the page for me!) The Czech Census records link doesn't find anything, likely because the only spelling I know is not the spelling being used in the records. The Hungary Civil Registration only has births to 1920, and Margalit was born in 1922. I will definitely keep looking... thank you for the ideas!

I found this search for Birth records of Jewish Czechoslovakians. i hope this can help!

Michael

Thank you, Michael! I'll check it out!

If it helps anyone help me, this is the link to the document for Dov Vojtech Palan from Who's Who in World Jewry, 1972 edition. It lists his father as Alexander (and Dov's living first cousin on his mother's side, Vera Benjamin, remembers his name as being Sándor / Alexander Deutsch

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000079419254370&

One of my grandmother Margalit Friedmann's parents is believed to have been a sibling of Sándor / Alexander Deutsch

As I don't have Margalit's surname to work with, I'm trying to determine who the siblings of Sándor / Alexander Deutsch were. Unfortunately, all of the Sándor / Alexander Deutsch's for whom I've searched, could not be the father of Dov Palan (1924-2013).
