My maternal great great grandfather Elias L. Waltz Elias L Waltz was born in Lawrence, Kentucky October 16, 1799. The state of Kentucky did not begin keeping birth records until 1852. I've had no luck contacting Kentucky historical societies. After having read in a few places that the first several generations of the Waltz family in America descended from Frederick Reinhart Waltz who settled in Pennsylvania in the early 1700's I tried tracing his descendants to see if I could find a record of any who had been in Kentucky. Once again no luck. Is there any help to be found?

Hi - I'm guessing you've already seen this: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/69441791

There are a couple of users on Ancestry that id John Johannes Waltz
BIRTH 1 JAN 1770 • Frederick, Frederick, Maryland, USA as his father, but I don't see any hard sources. One goes one level further to Hans Martin Waltz BIRTH 1740 (no other info).

Hi, yes I've seen his Findagrave memorial. Thanks though. I don't subscribe to Ancestry it's not in my budget. I have come across RootsWeb discussions I could access that gave me information on his various marriages. I hadn't come across the John Johannes Waltz or Hans Martin Waltz leads although I did try tracing their states of residence since they are both children of Fredrick Reinhart and are conceivably in the age range to have been Elias' father. I have gotten a great deal of the information I have from FamilySearch census and other records. As I mentioned Kentucky and Missouri Historical Societies haven't been helpful. From what I've been able to find most descendants of Fredrick Reinhart either stayed in PA or relocated to mostly IN, OH and IL.. The book Waltz Family History...listing 3000 names of descendants of Frederick does have two Elias' but they were both from Ohio as I recall. Thanks for your help.

Hi Michelle, your local library might have the library version of ancestry which you can use from their computers. I am not sure what it has access to as it has been a long time since I used it.

@Leanne Minny
Thank you. I've never considered using the internet at my public library for any purpose. The next time I'm in the area with some available time on my hands I'll see if they have a library subscription to ancestry.

On Wikitree, i found out Elias Waltz married Patsey S Perkins (b. 1824 Kentucky) on the 14 Mar 1840 in Monroe CO, MO. Patsey died 14 Aug, 1881 in an unknown location. They had children named Edward, Ann, Kitty, Jane, Samuel, Flood, Joseph B & Dudley. According to the website i found, Elias Waltz was born 16 Oct 1799 in Lexington, Kentucky. He died 8 Feb 1869 in Bakersfield, Kern, California. He is buried in Long Branch Cemetery Monroe County Missouri, USA. Here is a link to the picture i found of their gravestone.

He also married a lady named Sarah Donithau (B 1798 Lawrence co, Kentucky) on the 17 Jun 1822 in Lawrence Co. They had children named George, Mary, Lucy, and Sophronia.

I also found out that Sarah Donithau married a man named Chas Donley from the Kentucky Historical Society Marriage Book.

I did some more research on Elias Waltz's children because they could have some descendants. His child George married Sarah Ann Turner and had children named Julius Waltz and Nettie Monroe (Born Waltz). he died 1915 in Indiana. Here are some pictures of the gravestone

It stated his child, Sophronia's, name in a newspaper from Raleigh. She still had her maiden name, so she moved to Raleigh before she got married. I could not find any more about Sophronia.

@Mikey Ragonesi
Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me. I have never been able to find any reference to Sarah Donithau other than her marriage to Elias and their children George, Mary and Samuel H in a census. Do you by any chance have the date Sarah Donithau married Chas Donely?
I did see Sophronia listed as a child of theirs on MyHeritage by a user named Barnes, but I've never been able to verify her existence. Do you have any other information from the Raleigh newspaper article mentioning her name?
Thanks again.

It does not show the marriage date on the record.

I found a marriage record for Sophronia Waltz. She married James Williams on Jan 1, 1855 in Mobile County, Alabama.

I also think this may be the death record for Sophronia Waltz (married Williams).

I will do some research on Elias waltz's children.

I found the memorial record for Samuel Waltz (Elias waltz's son). He married Margaret Black.

Hi, I just noticed that you had made additional posts to this thread. Thank you for continuing to look for leads on my ancestors. The link you provided for Sophronia's marriage to James Williams is definitely a possibility. The death record link you provided is for a Sophronia Williams who was born in 1931 and died in 2007. She could be a granddaughter. Elias had two sons named Samuel. Samuel H was a son of his with Sarah and Samuel N, my great grandfather, was his son with Patsey. I'm not sure the Samuel Waltz you found is actually either of those because he was born in 1822. Samuel H was born in 1835 and Samuel N in 1851. There are census records that support the dates I have. Thanks for trying to give me new leads though. I really do appreciate it. As it turns out you are my 16th cousin one removed through my mom's mother's side of the family. So hello cousin.
Have a great day.
Michelle
