If you are expecting family members to see that comment, you probably want to post it in a Private Discussion. A Public Discussion - the whole world can see, but family is not alerted about.
A Private Discussion - created by, when creating the Discussion, after "Who can see this discussion?" click the circle in front of "Only my Family Group" [instead of leaving it the circle filled in in front of "Public"] - results in family being notified.
