I'd like some help for my nephew Miles Jackson. When I invited him to join Geni he was in college, and he joined with his college email account and password, both now long defunct and forgotten. He's recently become interested in his family history and being active on Geni but needs to change his account to his current email address and set up a new password.
How do we handle this? I'd be very grateful for any guidance anyone can give me.
Thank you.

Even if he no longer has access to that e-mail,
does he know the e-mail address and password he used back then?

Directions will be different if the answer is yes, versus if it is no.

He knows the old address but I'm not sure if he knows the old password. I've suggested that he try going into his account that way and then changing his contact information.
It would be helpful to know how to do this if he can't remember his password

First - easiest way is the one you say you have suggested to him -- and nothing will self-destruct if he types in his old e-mail address, then types in one guess at the password which turns out to be wrong.
Do not remember if one can sit there trying an unlimited number of times, or if after a certain number of times one needs to pause or whatever - but certainly would say he would lose nothing by trying any possibilities he can think of .

If he cannot remember his password - next question -- does Geni tell you no mail can go to his e-mail address and invite you to enter a new e-mail address for him?
If not - you might try sending him a message, and see if that triggers geni discovering that that e-mail does not work.

Believe if Geni has asked for a new e-mail address as above, and you give it -- then if he enters that e-mail address and says "forgot password" that they will send a new password to that e-mail address - then he can log in, make sure that is now his primary/only e-mail, and set the password he prefers.

At least, think it works that way - comment in Help from 2011 says back then it was not. But - it does give directions to change the e-mail once one has logged in, and the e-mail address to write to if cannot log in thru either of the above procedures:
https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/222038047-Need-to-ch...
- - Not sure which info you need to give, or if your cousin needs to be the one who wirtes, but if you write, include the URL of your cousin's profile, and if you were the one who originally added the profile, mention it. In the past, think what one got was Customer Service might then close the account, so you could then send a new invite using the currently correct e-mail.
(that is also basically what they say here: https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/articles/229702907

again, info - this time with link to where to change e-mail and passoword: https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/222076727-Can-t-use-...

As long as he knows his old email an password he can still log in to Geni since there is no validation to the email provider if the address is still valid. It is only when you want to reset your password that the email have to be valid, using https://www.geni.com/login/send_password to get an email to reset it.

In any case all curators have an option to re-open the email address field on a profile to give a family member the option to enter a new email without un-claiming the profile and loosing all managed profiles.

Another solution is to ask the user to create a new account and ask a curator to merge it with the old account. Of security reasons other none-public info should be added to the new profile to be verified with the old account by the curator to reduce the chance for profile hijacking.

Bjorn - did not know Curators had the ability to re-open the email address field, and did not think about suggesting creating a duplicate and then asking to have it merged.

Isabel - Given Bjorn's comments above, I would say ignore the suggestions in my 'help' links to send message to subscriptions .... - they close the account, let you re-send invite. Instead, if your cousin cannot log in, have him choose one of the suggestions in the last two paragraphs. As to how to ask a Curator for that help - either to re-open email address or merge his new singleton profile with his old profile - my guess is you could send Bjorn a message, since he is a Curator and made the comments -- or post the request in https://www.geni.com/discussions/178003

Lois and Bjorn,
Thank you for your suggestions which I will send on to Miles.
I will try to invite him again if that doesn't work. I not sure if I'm a curator, however, a distant family member is the manager and he did not respond to my request for assistance.
I'll let you know what happens.
Isabel

I have reopened your nephew Miles Jacksons email field to enable re-inviting him to Geni.

Thank you so much! I'm flying across country today but will try to invite him while waiting for the plane

I did send an email to Miles inviting him to Geni. I think Geni is working on merging the new email address with his account.
