About 2 years ago someone put on Ancestry the death certificate/burial information for Obediah (George?) Drury. He was buried on Jan. 17, 1649 In London. He had been living near Wapping/Wapping Wall--very close to the Thames River. He was buried in the cemetery at Stepney, London. There was no mention of his wife, who was Olivia Rice, the daughter of Edmund Rice of London. She was born in 1594.
The print on the certificate was difficult to read, but it looked authentic.
Obedia did not travel to the colonies, but his son (Hugh George?) did. Curious that Hugh traveled with the name George the first time he crossed the Atlantic--was he AWOL?
I believed many of the Drurys in London converted to Quakerism, and thus chose biblical names. Interesting that Olivia, his wife, did not choose a biblical name. Nor is 'Hugh' a biblical name.
I don't believe that Obedia was christened with that name.--I believe he chose it later. Much religious upheaval in England at that time with the rise of Puritanism and various other Protestant groups. Quakers were often abused because they did not fight back--at least that is what my mother-in-law told me. I would love to find the baptismal certificate in Suffolk or London so we can see what Obedia was christened. (Born in 1487--Sussex?)
