There seems to be wholesale confusion here in Geni, on FamilySearch and in most MyHeritage trees regarding who the Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo was that married this Philippus Johannes Riekert (Philippus Johannes Riekert, b1c4).
1. Geni seems to have it wrong at the moment - it is not ME Prinsloo the daughter of Petrus Jochemus Prinsloo and Susanna Maria Hattingh (Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo)
Most 'internet sources' (sic) agree with the current Geni connection, BUT the namegiving pattern just doesn't support this. For example, where would the names Hendrik Frederik come from?
2. Wikitree (amongst others, provides a useful clue). The Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo married to Riekert was actually the daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo, one of the Slagtersnek-rebels. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Prinsloo-234
3. Independent (?) confirmation of the Wikitree connection can be derived by inspection of an incorrect connection on FamilySearch: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/97VH-R12
Here HF Prinsloo's daughter Maria Elizabeth has been incorrectly connected to Nicolaas Johannes Grobbelaar. Why do I say incorrectly? Careful inspection will show that the names of their children reflect the Grobbelaar parents, but NOT the Prinsloo parents at all. Had it been the Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Petrus Jochemus Prinsloo and Susanna Maria Hattingh, that was connected to Grobbelaar, you would surely agree that the namegiving pattern would absolutely hold!
4. If we had access to the marriage records of the two Maria Elizabeth Prinsloos (to Riekert and to Grobbelaar), the respective bride's parents - if provided - might have given ultimate clarity.
My conclusion (awaiting your comments and confirmation, please!):
A. Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Petrus Jochemus Prinsloo and Susanna Maria Hattingh, was the one that was married to Nicolaas Johannes Grobbelaar 1803-1888.
[The information on this FamilySearch page (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/97VH-R12) has the wrong ME Prinsloo married to NJ Grobbelaar.]
B. Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo and Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, was the one that was married to Philippus Johannes Riekert.
[The information on Geni currently connects the wrong ME Prinsloo to Riekert. A profile for the 'correct' ME Prinsloo does not currently exist on Geni and will have to be created/added to her parents and her husband.]
Once there is sufficient agreement that my analysis and conclusions are correct, the corrections can be made. [If we make the corrections before inspection by you (the reader), the links provided will not make sense at all.]
Thank you for your attention and assistance.
Johann Ahlers
Good morning,
Without as yet correcting any of the profiles mentioned above, I have now ADDED the 'absent on Geni' profile of Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo of Slagtersnek - to aid our discussion. Maria Elizabeth Riekert, b3c3d5e4f4
SAG vol.8 p.485 has her married to Nicolaas Johannes Grobler, which I argue is incorrect. I believe she was married to Philippus Johannes Riekert.
Looking forward to your contribution, analysis, records and/or confirmation.
Thank you,
Johann
Here is the Nicolaas Johannes Grobler in question: Nicolaas Johannes Grobler
He is shown on Geni married to an ME Prinsloo without parents. SAG would have this ME Prinsloo to be the daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo and Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo. This is INCORRECT as argued above.
The CORRECT ME Prinsloo (married to NJ Grobler) would be the daughter of Petrus Jochemus Prinsloo and Susanna Maria Hattingh. This would resolve the name-giving pattern of the children of NJ Grobler perfectly.
Further evidence to support conclusion B above (ME Prinsloo, daughter of Hf Prinsloo and ME Prinsloo, was married to PJ Riekert).
I could not as yet find specific primary sources, but have been able to trace two secondary sources, considered to be of high quality:
1. "Genealogieë van die Afrikaner Families in Natal" by dr Ben Cilliers - page 497.
2. "Voortrekkerstamouers 1835-1845" by dr Jan C Visagie, published 2011 (1st Ed) - page 417.
In BOTH cases the wife of PJ Riekert is clearly identified as ME Prinsloo b2c3d5e4f4 - directly implying that she is the daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo and ME Prinsloo (as per SAG 8).
===Unless someone can counter this argument within 24 hours===, I will make the necessary adjustment (to B). A consequence, taking the namegiving pattern into account, and as a knock-on effect of B being true, is that conclusion A must also be true. I will therefore also make the necessary correction to A 24 hours from now.
Any responses?
Thank you,
Johann
This is to confirm that the changes have now been implemented on Geni. The final outcome is:
1. Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Petrus Jochemus Prinsloo and Susanna Maria Hattingh, was married to Nicolaas Johannes Grobbelaar 1803-1888.
2. Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, daughter of Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo and Maria Elizabeth Prinsloo, was married to Philippus Johannes Riekert.
(The information about these two ladies in SAG vol.8 was unfortunately swapped.)
Thank you!
Johann
