"I am considering hiring a researcher to look up baptism/marriage/death records for the Norris Square Methodist Church records that your site states are in your museum. Of interest to me are three volumes for the Norris Sq. M.E. church: Vol 6 {1871-1891], Vol 7 {1881-1887}, Vol 10 {1891-1909}) ~ I copy these from your online source.

Specifically I seek records of couple who seemed to been parishioners and lived nearby. These are
John Lieberman (c.1858 - Oct 13, 1895) and his wife Amanda née Favinger (c.1857 - Feb 15, 1896) as well as their two children, Gertrude and John Wesley. I have additional details.

Might you recommend a qualified researcher to assist me in this task?

Thank you,
Mike van Beuren"

Answer mailed from the M.E. Museum "You might save yourself the cost of a researcher if you can get access to Ancestry.com (if you don't have an account, the public library almost always does). All the Norris Square records have been digitized and are available on Ancestry. Just go to "Search All Collections" Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Church and Town Records, 1669-2013, Philadelphia County, CIty of Philadelphia, Methodist denomination and then look for Norris Square in the list."

On John:
I have just read through many pages of the Church registers of both the Eden M.E. Church and the neighboring parish, the Cumberland M.E. Church. I was hoping to find birth, baptismal, and marital entries that included parents of the couple John and his wife Amanda (Favinger). Sadly, there are none. I wanted to see the name Barbara Lieberman written in some such entry. (no death certificates either) drat...

Here are some other findings:

"John Leibermann (admitted at Eden M.E.) Dec 16th , 1883" (then)... "advanced to full membership" and later "Removed by letter Apr. 7th, 1888” < that is: John and Amanda were at Eden and then transferred to Cumberland parish. They later moved to Norris Sq. M.E.

• there is no record of John and Amanda’s wedding in either of these two parishes. It would be great to locate where and when they married. Perhaps it was at Amanda’s parents parish? I don’t know the faith of the parents… still looking
• there IS a record of a “Leiberman” adult baptized at Eden M.E. (no first name) < this would be supported by with John, baptized Catholic with Annie his sister. Hypothetically, John would then have chosen the M.E. faith
• all in all: This couple (and the children) belonged to three parishes during lives cut short by deaths. Only Annie Beekler (Lieberman) {1882-1950} lived a long life. The three are Eden > Cumberland > and Norris Square

(I have posted many of the M.E. church events in the timelines to the various profiles on GENi.

This Annie Beekler, dau of John and Amanda was a bit of a scarlet woman… She and her (later) husband ran off and lived together before marrying. Martin was then married w/children. She was the “younger woman"… It seems Martin abandoned the family business at the same time. I have still not found any 1st order document that confirms the “Ziegler” middle name for Martin.
If I’m not mistaken, the clipping of 1891 I’ve posted on GENi refers to the fire at this Martin Beekler’s shoe factory… The jilted 1st wife (née Sallie (Sarah Weiss) kept the factory (1910 census)… Maybe it was in her family before she married Martin??
At any rate Martin married our Annie Lieberman between 1900 and 1909 if the census data can be trusted. The jilted Sallie died in 1913 at age 53. Martin and Annie moved to Brooklyn and then to Haverhill MA.

... if I've got the tree set up correctly as of this post...

My proposed thought on the paucity of John Lieberman’s stories on my own side of the family is that John died so young. He died in 1895. Carl, my GG was then a sophomore at Penn.

Note: As of today... John Powel Lieberman and John Lieberman are two different people. A new profile has been made and given names have been modified to be more accurate.

My grandmother Ethel validated her parents illegal relationship...which lasted for the rest of their lives. They wefe completely devoted.

According to my Nana (Ethel Lefebvre) the factory belonged to Martin and a partner (name unknown). Annie was originally his secretary but alas a terrible one. But she was beautiful so his partner suggested he fire her and then marry her. Perhaps Sallie refused a divorce but regardless Annie was fired and went on to be the mother of his younger two children and the love of his life!
