Are you a Gerrit Van Swearingen descendant and have you or a family member had your DNA tested? If not, would you consider doing so?
My 2 brothers' yDNA results are most peculiar. Our surname has been BROWN since at least 1844 in Rock Island, IL.
However, the results do not significantly match other members of the FTDNA Brown Project. But they do significantly match to a BOLING and KIRKLAND. They also match SWEARINGEN (several matches at 37 markers or greater). They also match to two cousins born by Brown men but adopted out, as well as to a slave-owner (likely Boling) descendant.
Curiously the Boling and Kirkland matches do not significantly match others in their respective FTDNA groups. Based on the matches in the Swearingen WorldFamilies Project, I'm suspecting that our original surname in America will be Van Swearingen, as there are matches to my brothers' yDNA in this project, but need more results to be sure.
Recently, I became a co-admin for the Swearingen WF Project in hopes of encouraging more participants and helping with paper trail research. Of course, personally, I'm quite interested in folks with yDNA results, but those with atDNA and mtDNA
are also most welcome to join. Please contact me if you'd like more information on joining the group and/or taking a DNA test.
Also, if you happen to know how a Swearingen man became known as a Brown, Boling, or Kirkland, I'd love to hear from you. Additionally, there is a non-marital event with BAINBRIDGE and Swearingen, from another project participant.
Thanks so much!
Beth (Brown) Golden
Hi Beth Golden
Thank you for posting. I “think” I may be from Gerrit but it’s daughter line so I wouldn’t expect DNA testing to be useful for you. I’m on GEDMatch though if you see anything (EHowton).
Do you have Geni profiles for your name changers you could post to the discussion? If the tree is elsewhere post that too. You never know.
Hello , My Mother was a Swearingen and I have had my DNA tested through ancestry.com and also have downloaded it into My Heritage. I have traced my line back to Garrett Van Swearingen.
Sorry I can't help you with your question about the Brown family, but am interested about the Swearingen Project.
regards Steven Harris
Hi Erica Howton Thanks for your thanks :) I just ran a one to many on gedmatch for my older brother's kit and don't see you listed. But still need to compare with my own kit and my younger brother.
I have 2 online trees: ancestry.com (Brown-Turney Family) but set to Private to stop data-mining and another at wikitree (Brown-18795), but it's not complete, as is my tree here on geni. Fortunately, most of these other surnames are also connected to other ancestors and I've been able to add information to my tree on them. My atDNA is also on ancestry.com with username gramssearch. My brothers' yDNA is on FTDNA with kit #s 450862 and 450870. Also Gedmatch: me A626169, William T705694, and Benjamin T920026.
I hope that you're able to prove your connection to Gerrit's daughter soon! Eventually, we hope to include/display both at and mt DNA in the Swearingen WF project.
every good wish!
Hi Private User. Thanks for responding! Unfortunately, the WF Swearingen Project is only set-up at this time for yDNA, BUT it is hoped to eventually include at and mt DNA. In the meantime, you can view the project in case it helps your research here: https://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/swearingen I'll save your info and let you know when the main admin has set-up the project so that you can join.
I'd like to see if your DNA matches mine at ancestry.com. My user name there is gramssearch. Would you let me know what yours is? Thanks!
every good wish!
Hi Erica Howton and Private User,
The WorldFamilies project is still working on being able to fully include the atDNA results. In the meantime, if you'd like to explore our possible connections, please let me know. My atDNA has been tested and is on ancestry.com and my 2 brothers' yDNA is on FTDNA, plus all 3 of us are on Gedmatch. And, I've done quite a bit of paper trail research trying to find the details on when my Brown family was actually a Swearingen. I always enjoy collaboration! Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi Beth,
I checked Gedmatch and had low cM matches as follows,
T705694
Chr
5. 126,168,249. - 132,510,417 3.8 cM. 1060 SNP
12. 107,155,177. - 111,746,048. 3.9. cM. 829. SNP
20. 31,842,393. - 36,951,966. 3.7 cM. 848. SNP
T920026
6. 20,598,407. - 23,322,209. 4.6 cM. 812. SNP
For your kit. A626169. I get an error message saying kit not found.
Susan Cannon Thanks so much for running a Gedmatch comparison! I'm sorry that I wrote my kit# incorrectly! It is A627169. (I'll correct my original post). With the variance in inheriting atDNA, the low #s aren't surprising. ... at least they're there :)
Hope that you'd like to collaborate further. I *think* that my Swearingen ancestor will connect to Samuel (1692 SMC).
Hi Beth,
I re-ran the comparison. Here is what it showed:

Don’t know if there is any connection for you, but Marmaduke listed above has a brother Daniel who was married to Lydia Peters. They had a son John Barkley Swearingen who married Jane Brown.
Good Luck!
Susan Cannon Thanks so much! Leaving no stone unturned, could you tell me dates/locations for John B. Swearingen and Jane Brown, please?
Also, in my research I find the Stull family has a possible connection to my Brown family. So far, the connection hasn't led to finding my Swearingen ancestry, but just in case you have further information, here is what I've found:
Adam Stull signed a petition to form a new state in about 1780 in the area of Fayette, Washington & Greene Co PA and Ohio & Monongalia Co VA along with several Brown, Swearingen, Moore (2nd ggm's maiden name, wife of Richard Gibson Brown), Gibson (2nd ggf's middle name), and Snowden (Richard Snowden Kirkland [1705 MD – 1772 SC] m. Mary Brown). Kirkland is one of the yDNA surname matches.
Isaac Stull Swearingen b. 1809 Fayette, PA and d. 1888 Geneseo, Whiteside, IL. C.Y. atDNA match likely cousin through other lines as well; about 5th cousins. Whiteside County, IL is about 50 miles north of Rock Island, where my Brown family lived about 1840 - 1860.
Henry Stull in 1834 owned land in Rock Island, IL adjacent to Joseph Brown and Jacob Coleman (my 3rd ggf). Rock Island is where my 2nd ggf, Richard Gibson Brown, married Rebecca Moore in 1844.
Thanks for providing your Gedmatch # for all of your help, and best wishes.
every good wish
