We now have confirmation, via both Y DNA and autosomal DNA, that James Hook was not the son of Thomas Hooke/Hooke, but rather of James Moore of Prince George's County, Maryland. According to this DNA evidence, James Moore had relations with Annaple Beall Hook.

James Hook and his surrounding close relatives are the biggest headache I have for my direct ancestors on Geni. It will probably take lots of DNA to straighten it out. Interesting to see what else you guys can come up with.

It seems to me that this area is subject to genealogical crowding because of the pathways to Scottish Highlander glory. If you try to make certain changes in here they may be challenged. Not by me, I have tried to figure it out and gave up.
Go ahead and add this James Moore fellow. None of James Hook's father's side has a master profile.
Now, if your DNA test can come up with some facts about Mary Narcissa Stout (a practicing Quaker from South Carolina and James Hook's great-great grandson's mother-in-law) I would be very interested. Mary's grandparents are one of my brick walls.

Hi James, I extended my tree when my grandson was born. I will check on that line, and recommend a y dna for his great uncle. It would be interesting. I’ll keep you posted, but convincing and doing take time.

No, this is simply a matter of at least three descendants of James Hook (one being a male Y Hook) being proven through Y and autosomal DNA to be descended from James Moore. In addition to the DNA, James Moore and Annaple Beall Hook were both in Prince George's County at the same time. There was no marriage, and, of course, James Hook carried the Hook surname, though DNA is suggesting Moore. I know nothing about all the other lines you mention.

Two male Hoke's Ydna tested in my Hoke family & have Y haplogroup J-M205/J-M172. They descend from Thomas Hoke born abt 1789 MD; showing up in 1817 in Westmoreland Co, PA. I continue to wonder if my Thomas Hoke might be a son of Capt James Hook/Hooke. My grandfather Jesse Hoke claimed his Hoke ancestors were of English descent. Another Geni contributor claimed that John Inghram Hook, Sr descendants were haplogroup R-M269/RBY3368 but then stated "Conflicting DNA". There is a Hoch surname project with the haplogroup R-M269 stating their Hoch line is from Germany. It would be helpful if more of Capt James Hook male descendants would Ydna. Does anyone know of any other descendants of Capt James Hook that have Ydna tested?

I reread Robert Moore's 3/10/2018 post which states "via both Y DNA and autosomal DNA, that James Hook was not the son of Thomas Hooke/Hooke". I need help here...so I would be in error if I thought my Thomas Hoke born abt 1789 in MD was James Hook's son; considering that my male Hoke line has haplogroup J-M205/J-M172? I now see that the Robert Moore haplogroup is R-BY3368 which would explain the "Conflicting DNA" for John Inghram Hook, Sr, right? So my Hoke line would not descend from Capt James Hook?
