Hi,
I am looking for my Great great grandpa Steve Naumowicz, He was born on March 18, 1889 in Grodno,Russia.
I dont know any of his parents names. or if that was his real name at birth. The only info i have is he spoke Jewish that was on a rec I found. He come to the New York in 1907 and changed his name to Stephen Normich and died on October 1, 1960 in Queens, New York.

thanks I hope someone out there can help me. Paul

Have you look in the Belorus database on Jewish Gen (www.jewishgen.org)? The surname might be the same but the given name was not likely Stephen.

There may be additional records on Ancestry that tell you more - death and marriage often give parents' names.

I'll look on Jewish Gen.

Perhaps your grandfather lived in the province of Grodno rather than the city? Also it was not uncommon that when immigrants arrived at Elli Island that the custom officials changed the spelling as Belarus used Cyrillic rather than Latin characters.

I have not found anything on him with the Cyrillic characters yet. I know a little bit of Russian. I wish I can find some documents with the lettlers on it.
