The Sinking of the Junyo Maru was one of the largest, yet most forgotten, maritime disaster of WWII. In September 1944 5620 Dutch, English, Australian and American POWs and Javanese slave labourers died when the 5000 ton Japanese cargo boat Junyo Maru - under the command of Japanese Forces - was torpedoed off the western coast of Sumatra by a British submarine HMS Tradewind. The prisoners were on their way to Padang to be put to work on the Pakanbaru - Muara Railway in Sumatra. The list contains the names of 1382 Dutch, 8 US and 3 Australian POWs but not those of about 4200 Javanese slave labourers -Romushas- who also perished. It was the world's greatest sea disaster at the time with 5,620 dead. 680 survivors were rescued, only to be put to work in conditions similar to those of the Burma Railway where death was commonplace.
The projectpage https://www.geni.com/projects/Ondergang-van-de-JUNYO-MARU/46542 contains a list of casualties.
In the list are many names of people born in Indonesia, so I can’t find them in Dutch sources. I would appreciate some help from geni-users who have more experience with Indonesian sources to find relatives, so we can give them a place in the ‘big tree’.
https://www.geni.com/curators does not show any Curator as specifically having an interest in Indonesia
Hello Jeanette, We as a family survived the war with the Japanese in the Dutch Indies but it has left everyone with lifelong scares. We ended all in real prisons, we in Banju Biru and my Dad in Changy, Singapore. You can look up - www.roosjeroos.nl for Indonesian DTB s. Regards, Gerard Lemmens
Gerard W.Ch. Lemmens Thanks for your reply, I use roosjeroos also, but not many results for this project.
