I came across several transcribed records on JewishGen of the grandchildren of Moshe HaLevi SPITZ, but their last name is consistently written as SPITZER in Hungarian records.

Moshe's son Levi (Lébi in Hungarian records) can be found in the records of Satu Mare and Nagypeleske (Peleş, Romania) from 1850 to 1893 and he is buried in the Jewish Orthodox cemetery of Satu Mare, the second and third column are his parents' names: https://i.imgur.com/50QEcB4.png

I was researching one of Levi's children and was planning to change their last name from SPITZ to SPITZER because that was their name in the 19th century Hungarian records. But now I realize that Moshe HaLevi SPITZ comes from a long long lineage, so I will not change anything.

Did anyone who researches the SPITZ lineage came across a (gradual) name change? Or does it depend from time period to time period and from region to region? If the older generation is known as SPITZ in most records and the younger generation is known as SPITZER this should be visible in their profiles.

I have only researched Hungarian resources so far and I'm not familiar with the Hebrew literature available. But I'm curious if others also came across this SPITZ/SPITZER discrepancy.

Descendants of my 7G grandfather Naftali Avraham Hirsh haLevi SPITZ (c. 1628-1714) appear to have used the SPITZ surname quite consistently but in some families both spellings are used. Although SPITZER seems to have become more common in trhe 19th century, it also appears in 18th century Nikolsburg (Mikulov) records.

The descendants of Levi go by the name SPITZER in Hungarian records, I didn't check yet if any of them came to the USA and which spelling variation they used on ship manifests and naturalization files.

I will go by the spelling found on records, but sometimes family lore tells a different story. Perhaps the alternate spelling can be added in brackets in some cases.

The English translation of the Yizkor book of Csenger transcribes the name as Shpitz: https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Csenger/cse017.html#second

Your choices for Surname fields are:

Birth
Last name
Also known as (AKA) - also utilized in Searches
Display (where you can use / between surnames)

Official name change date & location - can be added in profile Overview and/or in Timeline

ps. you also have the ability to enter the Surname, etc. - in multiple Language fields.
Person can be known in Austrian archives, etc. as Louis - but as Lajos in Hungarian ones - thus Luis can be entered in English given name and Lajos in Hungarian given name.

Thanks, the name Spitzer/Spitz shows up in an extended part of my tree, I only added a couple of dates and place names here and there. I most of all put Lajos and Louis in the same field and I (should) use the language field for Hebrew names.

I don't know if Moshe HaLevi Spitz is also known as Spitzer, but his son Levi/Lébi is.

And what about "Halevi Halevi-Segal" in Moshe's profile, isn't that a bit too much?

The branch I've been working on contains a couple of duplicates, Rabbi Moshe, his wife and their son Levi. I didn't create the profiles and I don't want to mess up the World Tree, so I hope that someone with more merging experience wants to take a look at these profiles: Hagaon Hatzadik Moreinu Harav Moshe Halevi-Segal Spitz, Rav of Tsenger

I also think that Shimon Tzvi SHAFEITZ and Shimon Tzvi SPITZ are the same person and can be merged, unless they are brothers and one of them died before the other was born.

Is anyone willing to compare these two profiles, I think they are the same: Shimon Tzvi Spitz and Shimon Tzvi Spitz

SHAFEITZ is a poor transcription from Hebrew of SPITZ, so I will change that.

I have merged the duplicate profiles of:
- Hagaon Hatzadik Moreinu Harav Moshe Halevi-Segal Spitz, Rav of Tsenger
- Levi Yehuda Levi Spitz

1) I have restored the "About" section of Hagaon Hatzadik Moreinu Harav Moshe Halevi-Segal Spitz, Rav of Tsenger and found an interesting article in German about the origins of the surname SPITZ/SPITZER, the surname refers to the town of Spitz in Austria. This is a link to the article: http://www.jewishcommunity.at/Familien/Spitzer.htm

2) I don't know if Levi Yehuda Levi Spitz 's Hebrew name is Levi Yuda or Levi Yehuda, I kept Levi Yehuda for now.

3) I need some help with this profile, I have merged two duplicate of Rachel Bracha Freund Her name is Bracha in the database of the Orthodox Jewish Cemetery of Satu Mare: https://i.imgur.com/RV1WKw5.png

Rachel Bracha Freund 's profile is linked to several other duplicate profiles. I would appreciate it if someone is willing to take a look at these duplicates and eventually merge them. I am not familiar with these families and the correct spelling of their names, so I don't want to touch anything. But it seems that Rachel Bracha Freund married twice.

Thanks in advance :)
