Hello Geni's,
What is going on with this profile? I was checking through my previous connections (Zeus being a 99th great grandfather) and was surprised to find the connection paths missing to this and some other profiles of, in particular, the Greeks God.
They were fully working in December, last month, yet now after what seem to be the Henn Sarv. revisions these connections have been 'unconnected'. Can you or anyone else shine a light upon these changes or what is happening with these profiles please?
I see that a lot of linked profiles and managers working on this one have been removed or deleted before the changes. When will the changes be corrected or merged?
Thanks in advance
Yours truly
As many kings like to boast, they are the only ways to track back lineages, and usually to the oldest known of actual people. Some things go further than you might be able to imagine, but not all the gods were only as such, many were personifications of ancient rulers and kings which will now become fiction and forgotten by the select few who can make such an odd change in a world family tree.
King David and others (through my grandmothers line) are gonna be unattached and isolated due to a false morality? Every person from our family we have met still exists no matter what great names are put upon them. Even if it means nothing to sole souls, it can bring a great interest in history, culture, and religion to many.
such a shame
I do not think I am a direct descendant of Ashkenazi Jews, but I do have in my dna on 23andme, a recessive gene so far only found in these most studied populations, it seems to be that this line traced thru all the Kings of Troy may actually lead to the tribes of Benjamin and/or Joseph, and i have had many prophetic and vivid dreams thruout my life that have been proven true, just as Joseph had. Reality and dreamstate are not so different as some people who do not share these dreams and visions might believe.
Yes I was raised Catholic but never got the Holy Spirit until I read a book of Jewish legends longer than the Bible and then read Bible start to finish and then went to a week long revival at a little Pentecostal Church where I knelt toward Jerusalem, not the cross on the wall and everyone got the Spirit, spoken in tongues, etc.
Then I was "sent" by a series of "coincidences?" to Hawaii, where the Spirit of Aloha proved closer to Christianity then most religions and I lived like the first apostles with no money, no plan and every day was miraculous! Instead of memorizing numbered verses the Spirit gave me the words that applied in the moment.
Man has replaced real spiritual life with rituals that prevent miracles. Quantum physics has now proven we live in a mutable not a static universe. This has been debated since at least the ancient Greeks, but our scientists put on their own blinders, like horses afraid to look.
Only our own unbeliefcreates our limitations. All ancient wisdom teachings knew that God is Music, creating all light out of sound. (caduceus used by Navy medical corps is Egyptian symbol of intertwining of sound and light spectrums. 12 notes, 12 colors.) I watched the creation from the point of view of the watcher or soul of the Mother, and the Father/Son was pure music, light, love dancing thru me. At the end of every musical symphonic phrase, a star or planet popped into being, already perfect with every being on it singing together in harmony. Only man refuses to sing in harmony and this noise pollution is destroying the very fabric of creation.
When my first born son came to earth there was a grand opening of a 30" reflector telescope in Santa Cruz.
Only time open to public. We got there, it was cloudy so sat around a campfire till the stars appeared.
First we looked thru a smaller telescope and saw all 4 of Jupiter moons 2 above, 2 below in a perfect perpendicular line with the horizon. Then, when I finally looked thru the 30" telescope @ the spiral nebula beyond Orion, I "remembered" a dream or vision where I had flown there and back in just one night. I was going at the speed of thought, not the speed of light, but I could see the stars flying by. To this day, however, I cannot remember what happened while I was there.
Was also listed as a ggrandfather for me. Not sure how it was just "decided" to delete paths which deleted dozens of others that traced their lines back to that time period.
Whether they are "fictitious" as the one gentleman said or not isn't for anyone who was not alive at the time to say. Lots of religions deny the existence of figures in other religions.
Can their please be a definitive answer as to why & why previous lines also no longer exist to people that by no disagreement, did exist? This also changed relationships to others. Would like lines reinstated.
E. Joann Clough-Gordon "Can their please be a definitive answer as to why & why previous lines also no longer exist to people that by no disagreement, did exist?"
There is an easy answer, there isn't good enough evidence for every link from persons living today back to him. To put the links back together there need to be presented new evidence, and so far back in time that is extremely hard.
We also have to do with what is considered a deity. Normally there are lots of unproven stories when it comes to deities, and in our genealogy there should be trustworthy evidence for every link between two persons.
It is suggested not to temper with history and connections to one another. Just because some might have little connection to the bigger tree should not suffice as approval for disconnecting family which exists.
This has not just disconnected me from this profile but completely ruined and disorganised countless other profiles with each other and more importantly of the living.
I was under the assumption people would only be added to the 'world tree', yet it's becoming more clear to be certain groups 'world tree' of whomever thinks so highly of themselves as to disconnect millions to relatives, no matter what YOU personally assume to be valid points of connection.
It already CLEARLY stated with the profiles that they are FICTIONAL so that those simpleminded would not bother them. If it is not your family or related to you, then don't bother. We have no proof of the existence of people past those who can be remembered and proven by those who knew them. Just because people are revered as gods does not warrant the fallen leaves of the branches to bark back and change the status quo.
Moreover the connections show the ACTUAL history of Earth through the connections of the living to any (fictional) character or person. It is not only immoral to change such connections, but also a dictatorial change to what always has been without complaint. We should not have to be punished for others dismantlement of history and public knowledge.
Perhaps those who wish to change history like this and remove connections which are also incredible useful for scholarly works and connections without the tiresome research this family tree would have prevented, if not for a few whose own sad state or affair would wish to bring others to such a low level.
This is not YOUR personal tree(which those who continually make these changes), it is OURS, ALL of us. If this project wishes for any form of credibility then it should not undo the countless hours of others work throughout the ages by a mere click of a delete button for those who are not of effect on the world, such a shame.
Knowing who is who is the only way to stop history from repeating itself and knowing exactly when it does, it helps to know who is really who, and who are none.
I agree.
I am very glad I decided to make hard copy files, so that at least I can see where my connections used to be, and calling a profile fictional is just as much of a decision as to delete. For instance, I have traced many lines back in England, Scotland & Ireland. It is nice to read about, but with a grain of salt. I traced 2 separate lines back to 2 different "King" Arthurs & learned that the fictional one may have been based on a combination of the feats of both of these Arthurs. Does that mean that we should delete the actual ancestors because of a work of fiction based on their actual life exploits?
Also traced a line to a Knights Templar, le Sable, who was used in a current video game. Should we delete the historical one?
Niels and Andrea, this is a genealogical site, not a historical site, therefore we go by the genealogical standards and the first and formeost one is that a link between two persons should be provable by sources, preferably by primary ones. That means that there NEVER should be a link between a real person that good sources prove did live some time in the past, and a fictional person. Or that there should never be a link between two persons when there isn't any good sources proving the link.
Non of us genealogists are deleting any profiles, but when there isn't any good source saying that the link between two persons are correct, then the link can get cut, just because the doubt of the links correctness is more than 50%.
To me it is those that add or want to keep unproven links that are changing history and making it false, and I think that the usefullness for scholarly work diminishes alot when the links between people are false or unproven. If this site wants to keep it's credibility, the tree need to be correct, and then there is no room for fictional profiles that are connected to living persons of today.
If a profile is CLEARLY stated as FICTIONAL there should NOT be a link from that FICTIONAL person to any living person of today. And if such a link exist it is falsification of our history which is scholarly and genealogical wrong. Everyone knows that there can't be a link between a fictional person and a living person, then there shouldn't be such a link on Geni either.
I agree with Remi and follow the method he outlined as best we can.
If we know a profile is fictional, or legendary, or mythological, such as Zeus, it's wonderful to have his stories on Geni, but not a connection from him to me.
Godiva is different; there are stories about her, and also apparently a historic person. A smaller example of figures such as Robin Hood & King Arthur. I leave them to the scholars to tease out & place correctly.
But Zeus & the Hellenic pantheon? No, and same applies in other culture origin stories: that is, we preserve their genealogies, but disconnect where history begins.
Apart from this discussion are these profiles noted as fictional due to legal parameters and liability and not to 'trigger' those who disagree with the realness of any entity or person.
It is always easy to remove family from those you disagree or have not link/correlation with, as the last century starting with the Bolshevik ethnic cleansing of any peoples and history other than theirs.
The Greeks weren't conversing with hallucinations nor emptiness. They were converses with what we might not understand, yet gave us ancestry and genetics which are lying dormant to be found. You cannot preserve a genealogical line by disconnecting them from their families over countless hundreds of years, neither by removing any living links to them.
My point was not the (fictional) beside their names, which I of course understand as explained above, but the lack of both necessity and credibility of a true 'world tree' if it were to be censored by the few who have neither right nor honour/respect to make/decide on such actions.
The only safety and comfort you all have nowadays is that of family and connection to history, culture, and religion (which would be gained from such). Without knowing who is who all you do is enable a black-list of EVERY living or dead person that can be known. This can not serve any public good if ANY agenda is allow to alter what is and what is not.
The future will explain how such connections can be and what could be the gods and myths that are personified as well. How would you react as a primitive human whom could not even dream of the medium we are on now, yet witnesses one descend from the skies or the 'heavens'. This is not for us to decide, but to learn from an analyse, not to censor.
You need to also remember that the technology on Geni is limited and cannot do all the things we might like it to do. So we work with the constraints as best we can.
I believe several different issues are being mixed up here, as well as lack of clarity on terminology.
- fictional is what we (try) and label someone who never existed. Harry Potter is a character in a novel. Do you want to be related? I sure don't.
- mythological (or like that) is for deities. All cultures have origin stories. At some point before written history "they came to earth" as a person, who had families we can trace as best we can.
I'm most familiar with the Greek stories so will use that.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_of_Troy was (I think) a real person and there's a well known story she plays a big role in. Was she really the daughter of Zeus? Someone thought so, or "later on" someone thought so (Remi's point); yet she was a real person and had real children etc. Where do we make the distinction? I would think about linking her to her legendary origins within the profile for easy navigation to see that tree.
Do I want to show my family a descent from Zeus? I most assuredly do not, it is insulting to them. Do I want to believe it's possible? Of course it's possible, what do I know? Geni, however, cannot show that except, I think, by the methods described, at this time.
If you want to show a descent from a mythological being in your tree, that's why personal trees were invented. :). But in the world family tree? The accuracy and integrity of the Zeus family is the concern: did we get the genealogy right? Not my own selfish - who cares - connection to him.
Sorry for rant, but I believe we are all connected, we just don't know how yet. It doesn't matter to me whether I have a path to Zeus, if I believe he's an ancestor, then he is. But we "do not" know how we connect to Zeus, we only (might) know how we connect to his human children.
There's a working genealogist I respect whose DNA test is matching mine at perhaps the 4th cousin level, I would love to piggy back from his detailed genealogy work. But he warns that "we will probably never know" how we connect.
In it's own strange way, this is a similar problem, and we do not have the software for speculation in Geni at this time. So there you go.
Robin Hood is yet a different kind of problem, one of identifying him, as there were many stories over many years.

I'm not sure how he's currently presented on Geni, or what the state of historical scholarship is about him. I think, though, we (anyone interested) would discuss the possibilities from discussions on his profile and arrive at a decision on how he's best shown.
Game of Thrones would have nothing (much) to do with this.
I traced my grandfathers thru all the King's of Troy, who kept good records up until saying they were descended from Zeus. Then it looked to me that the name Zeus was added later, but that there is an historical reference to Phatar, son of Judah & Tamar, who was an actual person, but whose name was changed later to Zeus. So who can tell?
I found an historical grandfather who may or may not be the basis for Robin Hood.
However, I never knew that when I was young, but Robin Hood was my favorite character and I often wore a costume my mom made for Halloween Robin Hood character all summer for years, along with a "fake" bow and arrow with a rubber tip you had to lick to get it to stick to the target board my dad had made me out of wood. Since my last name was Bowe, meaning "maker of bows", I guess I was predisposed to it.
Also, I did not know my descent from Irish, Scottish, & England's kings and queens, but was raised by Scotch-Irish babysitters who were direct from the old country, so was imbued by that spiritual connection despite not "knowing".
Can there really exist such a crazy thing as coincidence?
