Quoting from William Bassett in Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume I.

Name: William Bassett, son of William Bassett, "yeoman," of Newport, in Isle of Wight, England, had seen military service; came to Virginia prior to 1665, when he was made commander of the workmen employed in building a fort at Jamestown; was paid 10,000 pounds of tobacco for his services; acquired a large estate, and died in 1672, leaving a son, William Bassett, of "Eltham," New Kent county, member of the council, by Bridget Cary, daughter of Capt. Miles Cary.

Eltham was situated in New Kent County, Virginia. The property was owned by the Bassett family. Captain William Bassett was reportedly the first of the family to come to Virginia. He died in 1672 and was succeeded by his son, William Bassett, who died in 1673. This second William Bassett was a member of the Virginia Council. There was a third William Bassett, who inherited the place and was a member of the House of Burgesses. The son of the third Bassett, William Burwell, became owner of Eltham and also a Burgess.

Bassett Family Association, Newsletter May 2005

The Bassetts of Eltham, Blisland Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, were possibly descended from the Bassetts who for a long time had lived in Southampton, England.
William is possibly a descendant of James Bassett and Mary Roper.
James Bassett, Gentleman of the Royal Chamber, died in 1558. He married Mary Roper, daughter of William and Miss Moore Roper of Eltham in Kent, England. Miss Moore was the daughter of Sir Thomas Moore, Lord Chancellor of England. This may be where the Eltham name in Virginia came from. The arms on the tomb of the emmigrant William Bassett and upon the family silver corresponds with the arms of the Bassetts of Umberly.

William Bassett, son of William and Ann Bassett of Southampton, England, was born in 1640 in Newport, Isle of Wight, England. He died in 1687. He married Bridget Cary, daughter of Miles and Ann (Taylor) Cary. She was born in 1645 in Warwick County, Virginia. She died in 1702 in New Kent County, Virginia. He was a member of the House of Burgesses, and of the Council for 1667.

James Bassett died 1558. Descent would be through his son Phillip Bassett

Who had two daughters.

If James and Mary Bassett had had a daughter Mary she would have had to have been born between 1555 and 1558 when Mary died.

I believe the dates for the Joseph Foster II who is said to have married Mary are around 1655-1715. This means that Mary would have been over ninety years of age when her future husband was born!
