Profile: John Farrell

I don't have much information at all on John Farrell, however his obituary says that he was a Whaler and first came to NZ in 1824, but jumped ship to Hawkes Bay in 1828 (Obituary included in the about of his profile).

I would also like to add him to the main project page, but is an obituary with the date enough to be considered accurate? I cannot find any other records that could place him in NZ at the time, such as the birth or marriage of his daughter Mary Ann Small, but the grandchildren can all be found on NZ BDM with the surname Smales.

I was wondering if anyone had any other information or knowledge of the family, as my relation had no idea about his ancestry until very recently and is very interested to know more.

Hi Patricia,

I'd say it's sufficient I've been able to locate 6 copies of the obituary from different newspapers of the time all more or less repeating the same obituary.

link is here to pull up these results if you wanted to see them all.

Other than newspapers and diaries there is very little else to go by as birth and death records were not officially kept until 1848, anything prior to these dates is considered a bonus if it even exists.

while doing research you will often find the most detail about someone from their death printout, as the years went by more information was recorded about people. and can point to things such as ages of living issue.

You might try your luck on http://freereg.org.uk and see if you can locate a baptism record, this might lead to reveal his mothers name, and then you could use the parents names to try and search for siblings.

All the best in your search.

Thomas
