I'm having trouble making head or tail of the Cheneys in this area of the tree, not least because Ancestry.com in its insatiable greed has DESTROYED Rootsweb and all its affiliates because "security breach". With Cheneys in both Massachusetts and Maryland, it's inevitable that they *will* occasionally get mixed up. Keep an eye out for this, please?

"Joseph Samuel Cheney" probably represents a Joseph *and* a Samuel - it's still a bit early for middle names.

Somebody please document where you found "Rachel Jones" as wife's name, and make sure it's NOT a Massachusetts Mixup.

Maven - this was my original entry and notes -

I. Richard III Cheney (Cheyney) IMMIGRANT Richard "the Planter" Cheney was born in 1630 in Woolwich, London, Middlesex, England. He died in 1685 at the age of 55 in South River Hundred, Anne Arundel, Maryland. He was buried in All Hallows Church Cemetery, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. 4. Richard Cheney / Cheyney III *** (Richard , Richard ) was born in 1630 in Woolwich, London, England. d. 1685, South River Hundred, Anne Arundel, Maryland

one source has him as son of WILLIAM CHENEY and ANNE ELINOR

By negotiating other warrants, Richard Cheney soon became one of the largest land owners in the South River Hundred. During 1653 he patented "Cheney's Neck" with 110 acres, "Cheney's Resolution" with 400 acres, "Cheney's Hazard" with 100 acres, "Cheney's Rest" of 300 acres, "Cheney's Pruchase" of 100 acres, the total amounting to 1110 acres

Anne Arundel gentry, volume I, 2nd edition states: "The Cheney (Cheyney)family of ancient antiquity was ennobled in england, but through extravagance and being royalists during the civil wars lost most of their property. There is every reason to believe that the Maryland emigrant was a scion of the ennobled family. He was lettered(could read) and the fact that he financed his own passage and that of his wife is further indication of his social level.

The earliest entries in the All Hallows Parish, Anna Arundel County, Maryland are those of the Cheyney (Cheney)family. The date of the entry precedes the date of the establishment of the parish. It is evident that the family kept their own records.

He probably landed in Virginia and moved to Anne Arundel County, Maryland with his wife Charity. He is mentioned as a signer of a Proclamation of Loyalty to the king. Richard and his wife, Charity, migrated to Maryland and settled in the South River Hundred of Anne Arundel County. Sharon Doliante in her book "Maryland and Virginia Colonials" states: Richard Cheyney, sr, born: (ca) 1630, died after 3-6-1685 (date of his will) and before 8-16-1688(date his estate was appraised) married Charity, who died in the mid to late 1600's: he then married Elinor(eleanor) who survived him.

On 7-23-1658 Richard Cheyney entered his claim for the land he and his wife were entitled to for the entry into maryland."

21 Nov 2008 - Anne Arundel Gentry states "It is evident that he was single when he arrived in the Province, because between the years of 1634 and 1682 no female by the name of Cheney was listed among the immigrants. He, however, married twice, but the name of his first wife is unknown

The article below appeared in the Baltimore Sun on September 14, 1999 and is about My Chaney line.

Homebuilding site develops into an archaeological find. Cheney homestead from 1650s offers remnants, mystery.

By Andrea F. Siegel Sep 14 1999 Sun Staff.

It doesn't look like much -- angular depressions knifed a foot deep into the hard clay in woods about 5 miles from Annapolis.

But archaeologists believe the location marks an important site -- the home of a well-known Anne Arundel and southern Maryland family, dating to about 1658.

An excavation begun last year has revealed the first known Chaney -- or Cheney, as the spelling varies -- homestead, called Cheney Hill.

The site, believed to have once held two wood-post buildings, each with a fireplace and chimney, was discovered during an archaeological check of acreage for a proposed residential development.

Working through 350 years of land records revealed that Richard and Charity Cheney bought 100 acres that included that site in 1658, and Cheney rapidly extended his holdings to 1,200 acres.

Through generations, the family settled largely in the Bristol-Lothian area of southern Anne Arundel County, but also moved into Calvert County. Chaneys, under various spellings, account for more than half a page in the Annapolis phone book.

What makes the find particularly significant is the information it might hold about life in an early period and the mystery of its location, said Al Luckenbach, Anne Arundel County archaeologist, whose office is supervising the dig.The dig has turned up shards of imported German pottery, beads for Indian trading, pipes, utensils, a finger-length iron key, glass, a brick and other common items.

The soil points to frequent repair of rotted ortermite-eaten posts sunk 2 1/2 feet in the ground.

"We never really knew where they landed, other than it was in Anne Arundel County," said descendant E. Steuart Chaney, whose interest in 19th century history is so intense that he is putting together a small village with buildings from that era at Herrington Harbour. "And now to have the house discovered. It is significant not only to the heritage of our family, but to the heritage of the county."

The structures would have been built about 24 years after the founding of Maryland colony, and their abandonment would have been just at the time London Town, to the south, was developing into a population and business center.

Fewer than a dozen sites from 1658 to the mid-1680s, when the Cheney buildings are believed to have been abandoned, have been found in Anne Arundel County, where Luckenbach is researching "lost towns" of that era.

But this site is perched on a steep knoll off Riva Road and the South River.

"One of the obvious questions is, Where are you growing your tobacco? He is sitting on top of this hill," Luckenbach said.

Tobacco was so lucrative that it inspired a gold rush-like stampede to grow the cash crop. It was similar to the fur-trapping and trading boom that was on its way out by the time Cheney bought the property.

"The way the story goes is that they lived on low areas and grew tobacco. He is not fitting the paradigm. There may be others [who] don't fit the paradigm, but this is the first one that we found," Luckenbach said.

With the house built so high up, someone would have had to carry water up from the river or creek for daily use.

Luckenbach speculated that the site may have been defensive -- protection from Indian raids, or perhaps from other settlers during a time of intense strife in England that also resulted in clashes in Maryland.

The Cheney family is believed to have left England soon after King Charles I was beheaded in 1649, said descendant Bill Chaney, a Revolutionary and Civil wars buff who visited the site earlier this month.

Luckenbach speculated that Cheney might have feared Royalists. But Bill Chaney said yesterday that a 1955 genealogical paper referred to his ancestor as a Royalist. So maybe he worried about local Puritans or was security-minded in general.

Early work on the dig was paid for by CJF Joint Venure and Koch Associates, which still hopes to build a single-family development there. Since spring, when the developers' archaeological obligation ended, Luckenbach has taken it over. He wants to map at least the footprint of the main house.

The find has left more questions than answers. Why did Richard Cheney come to the New World? what did he do for money? Why are there two buildings with fireplaces? And why was his home lot on a steep hill?

What Bill Chaney knew from the 1955 genealogical paper on his family was that the family came from the Isle of Sheppey and that Richard Cheney financed his passage to America. Richard and Charity had four children. After Charity's death, Richard remarried and had seven more children. But he had no idea where they lived.

"If I didn't know where it was, I'd never have found it," Chaney said.

Richard was married 2 times.

Richard CHENEY III, born 1630, in Woolwich, London, England. He migrated to America in 1649, as stated by genealogist Harry Newman, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

"Harry Wright Newman, in his Anne Arundel county Gentry 91933), included a chapter on this family in which hestated that Richard Cheney, Sr. arrived in Mayland before 1650,a single man; that he was twice married, but that the name of his first wife was unknown. He also listed Richard Cheney,Jr., as the eldest child of Richard, Sr., and his first wife, and stated that Richard, Jr., was b. about 1649.

A record (which will be given in full, infra), in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, shows that Richard Cheyney and Charity, his wife, arrived in Maryland by 1658, and without children.

They were allowed 50 acres each, for their own transportation in to the province. It is evident, therefore, that they came after 1651, since for a period up until June 20, 1652 [Maryland Archives, vol 1, p. 332), persons were allowed 100 acres each for settling in Maryland

One is puzzled, however, by the deposition of their daughter Elizabeth (Cheney) Iiams, who stated in 1775, that she was then 74 years of age, thus b. C1651, and presumably in Maryland, since so far as we know, there is no record showing that she was transported to the province. If she was b. in the province in 1651, why then did her parents wait 6 or 7 years to claim the land that was due them for their own transportation?

"While we have never heard such a theory expressed, it is our definite felling that Richard and Charity Cheyney, Sr. came to Maryland from Virginia. They chose Anne Arundel Co.as their new home, and this area was principally settled by Virginians.

Also, Richard seems to have been on expecially friendly terms with William Burgess and William Cock(s), who drew up and witnesed his will. William Burgess was definitely from Virginia, and it seems very likely that William Cock was also.

In addition, one Richard Cocke, of henrico Co., in Virginia transported into that colony before Mar 6, 1636 (among others) one Robert Cheyny [Nugest, op. cit., p. 54]. And, there were other Cheneys in Virginia, as well as a few later ones in Maryland."

Richard Emmigrated to the Province of Maryland sometime before 1650. It is evident that he was single when he arrived, because between the years 1634-1682 there were no female members of the Cheney family listed among the immigrants.

Richard, soon after arriving, applied for land grants, and became a large property owner in tdhe years to come

As stated before; this information does not help anyone when it is just stored in my computer database or in my file cabinets. To keep this book as short as possible I have included no notes. Anyone wishing additional information of any person should contact the author. I will gladly share any of my information.

Abel b 1746
Sarah b 1748 Susanna
Hezekiah, Sr b 1750 (Birth dates are not
Anne available on the other children)
Elizabeth
Sophia
Thomas
Delilah

Hezekiah, Sr. went to the Cripple Creek area in Wythe County, VA about 1775, according to Mary Kegleys book "Glimpses of Wythe County, Virginia." He lived on a tract of land containing 393 acres located on McCendleys(McKinleys)Run. The run, or branch is designated as Chaney Branch on topographic maps. The land lies south of Lick Mountain in the area of Rowes Crossroads.

In Virginia, the name Chaney was written with several variations, perhaps because Hezekiah could not write and adopted an unusual seal to serve as his signature. The name was written Chiney, Cheyne and Chinia. Hezekiahs family was the only Chaney family in the early records of Wythe County and by 1830 there were none.

Hezekiah acquired several tracts of land, about 2100 acres, adjoining his original property. In addition to his house and out buildings he owned and operated a mill located at the gap below his house.

In addition to operating the mill Hezekiah planted valuable orchards, and sold timber to a local charcoal furnace.

Hezekiahs will was executed on March 12, 1812 naming his daughters as Sally Williams, Betsey Stone, Polly Stone, Jenny Cowden,Nancy Cowden and Caty, single. The two Cowden men were Joseph and Robert, Jr. who lived near Rural Retreat. The sons mentioned in the will are Hezekiah, Jr., Archibald, Abel, Hoseah and Hiram.

Hezekiah, Jr. married Alpha Nuckolls and Hiram married Mary Etter in 1813, and shortly afterwards went west as many did in those times. Hezekiah, Jr, had four children born in Wythe County and four born in Tennessee from 1819 to 1827.

Hezekiah, Jrs first born was Asa, born 1813 in Wythe County. Asa moved to Talladega, Alabama sometime prior to 1845. All his children were born in Alabama.

I have never had Rachel Jones listed as his wife until it came up on GENI and it probably came down in the GEDCOM I made from GENI into the photo print out I made

I have deleted her out of my personal file

You will note that my original notes say -

Another has him listed as -

........... 4 Joseph CHANEY b: May 1686 in Anne Arundel Co., MD
............... +Rachel JONES Father: Richard Jones

I see that your are the one who entered her profile as his wife in 2013

"Happy New Year" Judi. Samuel Cheney (1730-bef1806) is my 6th Great Grandfather. I haven't had time to actually complete most of my Cheney/Hardisty Line, but, hopefully one day. I definitely need to keep up with your research. Thank you. Larry Dean Sturgeon

I entered "Unknown Wife" - somebody else labeled her "Rachel Jones".

IMHO Cheneys are nothing but trouble. ;-)

Am having to overhaul and update my personal genealogy files because I can no longer rely on places like Rootsweb to keep the information for me. :-P

MAJOR pain.

Ancestry.com should be hit with a class action suit for theft of intellectual property.

Ancestry has been veeeerrrry sloooowwwwly restoring bits and pieces of Rootsweb information, probably hoping that long absence would make people forget about Rootsweb (fat chance!).

Rootsweb at its best is about as reliable as crowd-sourced information gets, especially when the contributors are serious genealogical researchers who source and annotate as much as they possibly can. At its worst, well, it's still a little bit better than Ancestry. :-P
