My family descends from Richard Shelton and Frances Jones Barnett; both were born in Louisa County, VA and died in Guilford County, NC. Our family research leans to them being married in or near Stokes or Rockingham Counties, North Carolina about 1806. The oldest child was Ann Winston Shelton and born 1807 in Stokes Co., NC. A document written by their son, the Rev. John Anthony Winston Shelton, he was not named for a governor but for Anthony Winston of VA, states that Richard's father was named Samuel Shelton. We believe other documentation from another son, Samuel Richard Shelton who settled in Tipton Co., TN, refers to Richrard's mother being Ann Winston, a daughter of Samuel Winston and his wife Elizabeth of Louisa Co/ Hanover Co., VA. Sam does not mention his Shelton grandfather. John Shelton made a statement that his grandmother Shelton was a daughter of Joseph Winston who served in the Revolution for NC. Our research found that Ann was a sister of Maj. Joseph Winston and she is named in her father's will and the right age group to have a child in Dec. 1779. Several of our line have done DNA. We do not match Ralph Shelton. The project was Family Tree and the results are maintained on a web site maintained by Tina Hall. Included are many lines of Shelton that do not match DNA and those that do are color grouped. There are other Richard Shelton in the same age group in VA and NC including in near by Pittsylvania Co., VA. Marie Reedy
