Hi, need help understanding how the Matches work . I have 51 matches with Geni Basic do I have to pay to have information added to my tree. For example when I open a match it leads to another area such as Heritage family tree and asks to join. If so joining will my tree be automatically updated or I will need to search and do this myself.
Thanks
Sharon
I left you helpful links, including a link that discusses the various kinds of matches in this discussion:

Green matches can be of great value for some families / populations if you use SmartCopy, assuming that you have many relatives that descend from the same ancestor.
For example, Campbell is an Indiana branch of descendants of my great great great great grandfather. There are good family trees for Campbell on Ancestry and on MyHeritage. Using Google Chrome browser and SmartCopy (a user created tool), I can automatically update my Geni tree with information from other people's family trees or from Find A Grave. You have to be careful because the information may or may not be correct and some trees are quite bad. But if you know nothing about a branch, this is a good way to get a kickstart and then you can follow up with your research or contact people who belong to that branch to improve the tree.

Sharon Marrero -- if you have a subscription to Ancestry, it's a good place to gather information. FamilySearch is a free site that has a ton of records.
If you do not have a subscription to Ancestry, you might check your local library, and see if it has a subscription to AncestryLibrary - not as convenient as sitting at home, but free, and I believe has basically the same info as Ancestry. Definitely - if you have not checked out familysearch.org - do so!
