If you need a [https://www.geni.com/projects/Cause-of-death-portal/27730 Cause of Death portal] project that isn't listed, please let me know here. I enjoy working on them and as a retired RN, I have plenty of time. I have worked on many of the Medically related projects so those are a little easier with my medical background. It is easier to follow-up with comments & observations if the queries are all in one place & discussion. I am sure that Erica will be following this discussion also as the Cause of Death portal is her "baby".
I have also worked on "Survivors of..." projects so please feel free to include those needs here also.
I will ask Mike Stangel to lock the [https://www.geni.com/discussions/164998 Medically related projects] discussion as I have been working on more than just the Medically related projects and will continue with ALL Cause of Death project needs here.
I am sure that there are some causes of death that an "expert" in that area would do a better job on a project than myself. I hope others who follow this discussion will "jump in" on a proposed project that they may know a lot about, either by volunteering to create the project or by adding comments about the subject in question. An "expert" would look at things differently than I might.
I appreciate input on projects that are "in the works".
I usually add more than one pix and appreciate input on which is the "best" pix for the project.
Thank you in advance to all who follow & contribute to this discussion. Have a great day.

Erica Howton,
Would it be helpful to have a note at the top of the Cause of Death portal about this discussion??? Maybe something like: "If you don't find the cause of death you are looking for, please bring it to our attention in this discussion: [https://www.geni.com/discussions/172707 Cause of Death Projects needed??? Cause of Death projects needed???]"
Word it however you like... maybe put it in italics?
Pat
Erica Howton.
I added the comment about referring to this discussion in the Cause of death portal by deleting the "create one"... and inserted "...please see this discussion: [https://www.geni.com/discussions/172707 Cause of Death Projects needed???] in the intro to the project. I was going to add a comment about going to this discussion, but after reading your intro to the project saw that the referral could be added easily by this change. See if you agree; If not please reword or reformat it.
There is talk on the TV about deaths due to opioids. Is there enough interest in having having a project for "Deaths from Opioids" and maybe also one for "Deaths from Prescription Drugs" for projects??? Do we want one or two separate projects for these??? When one looks at the "Addiction" (see https://www.geni.com/projects/Addictions-General-Information/41443) project they are listed as 2 separate causes.
I haven't looked for info on these two means as a cause of death yet, but thought I would see what others think of these causes of death.
I will start working on a project for "Deaths from Opioids" to start with. (The name for this project is open for discussion also).
Erica Howton
Or do we want to have a more general one for "Died from Drug Overdose"??? and have sub projects under it (i.e. for opioids, Prescription drugs)??? It would still go under the "Addiction" category.
This site: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_from_drug_overdose_and... Wikipedia - List of deaths from drug overdose and intoxication] has a LONG list of people! The intent was sometimes suicide so could go into a project for both causes.
Am still looking for info on this topic.
Here it is (for now) https://www.geni.com/projects/Deaths-from-Opioid-Overdose/45739
I put it under the Addiction heading in the CoD portal... Do we want it as a separate category under the "Natural" heading rather than under the "Addiction" heading????
Does the project title need to be changed to cover all possible drugs???
I have a multitude of pix that I will add as soon as I am done here. Don't know which would be best, so would appreciate input.
I don't see anything about drug overdoses under suicide or accidental death... I think there could be a link to both of those causes with the comment to "add the profile to those causes if appropriate" (or something similar...)
Erica,
Oooops, just found the one under Accidental: "Combined drug intoxication". I could add the following comment as part of the intro to the "Death from Opioid Overdose":
----
Profiles may also fit & can be added to the following categories:
* [https://www.geni.com/projects/Suicide/27738 Suicide]
* [https://www.geni.com/projects/People-who-died-from-accidental-combi... Accidental Drug Intoxication]
----
Is there another project that needs to be added to that comment???
One thing to always keep in mind for cause of death is that we begin with matching what we’re likely to see on a death certificate. Pat, do you have those links for the algorithms used by coroners? So there are streams of legality: natural and unnatural. Under unnatural there is accidental or intentional.
A car accident is unnatural, but the medical cause could be many different results of the accident. If the car was stolen is not relevant to the medical cause. But it could make a good story.
So those are some of the cross reference tags to think about.
@Erica,
Do we want / need a general headed project for "Drug Overdose, general info" like "Infections, General info" with links to the different causes that are found under different headings in the CoD portal (i.e., suicide, multiple drugs, opioid overdose, alcohol addiction)??? Most of the time the "drug(s)" used is known, so the project would not necessarily be used for profiles UNLESS the drug is unknown. Although I am not exactly sure where it would go in the portal.
No I don't know of the links for the algorithms. Should the projects for "Addictions", Alcohol, Delirium tremors & Opioid overdose go under the "Unnatural" heading instead of "Natural" heading???
Please add tags you feel should be included for the opioid project and any other projects that might relate. Please also modify the statement linking the two project (any others???) in the intro area. I am not exactly satisfied with the wording.
Thanks for your input. It is always helpful & pertinent.
Erica Howton,
I started a project (not in system yet) for "Drug Overdose, General info" & have used the following sites for additional reading:
* [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_overdose Wikipedia - Drug overdose]
* [https://drugabuse.com/library/drug-overdose/ DrugAbuse.com- Drug Overdose]
* [https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/drug-overdose#1 WebMD - Drug Overdose]
Most of the info comes from the Wikipedia site as it lists all of the types of drug overdose freq. involved in deaths & is grouped by ICD-10. I don't think we need projects for each individual type, but many could be grouped together... Alcohol, Opioid Overdose, Dug "cocktails" are on the list. We could put links to those already in the portal...
Sure, maybe a little umbrella page for the drug related deaths projects is a good way to handle it.
Way back when we found descriptions of how cause of death ends up written on a certificate. I think the links are in the portal project. The most detailed and interesting was from a Canadian Nurses group.
Erica Howton,
I will go ahead & create the project. But the big question is: Where should it go in the portal ????? If it is a separate project that would go in the alphabetical listing, would you put it under the "Natural" category & put it after "Dropsy" or in the "Unnatural" category after "Carbon Monoxide Poisoning"???
OK folks, there is now an "umbrella" project for "Drug overdose". See: https://www.geni.com/projects/Drug-Overdose/45749
I don't know where it is going to go yet in the portal. It may still need some minor tweaking. Look at the pix options & see if one of the other options would be better...
Erica Howton, Now I am confused. I will let you put the Drug OD "umbrella" project where you want it in the portal... and add that heading to the "jump back to..." as we need more than just CoD portal...
Yes, I agree that mis-prescribed drugs would fit under medical error, but it could be a tag for the combined drug OD project couldn't it? Hopefully people would read the info in that site & determine that it wasn't the right one... (maybe we need a link to the Medical error project, just in case???)
Erica Howton, Kevin Lawrence Hanit:
Would it be a benefit to create projects for several more of the Drug Overdose categories found in the https://www.geni.com/projects/Drug-Overdose/45749
project? Such as:
* Sedative / Hypnotics - to cover all? &/or have a separate one for barbiturates?)
* Stimulants - general to cover all including cocaine & amphetamines, &/or both general & a separate ones for those two?
I don't know how detailed you might want these drug overdose projects you might want to get...
There are quite a few famous people that will fit in those categories & there are ICD-10 codes for each of those categories. See listing at this site:
* [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_from_drug_overdose_and... Wikipedia - List of deaths from drug overdose & intoxication] (Will be adding this site to the OD umbrella project.)
