Bertha raised Jane Coburn Bell and Susan Allen Bell as her "adopted" daughters, with Susan being the daughter of her niece, Marion Woodworth Smart, nee Allen, Bertha's brother George Allen's, daughter. Although Susan always knew Bertha was not her biological mother, it wasn't until Bertha died in 1975, that Susan discovered her actual birth certificate in the family vault, declaring her biological mother to be Bertha's niece, Marion. So in fact, Bertha was Susan's great-aunt, as well as the woman Susan knew to be "Mum" growing up.@Bertha Mildred Bell(Allen)
My father William Worden Allen and your biological mother Marion Woodworth Smart (Allen) are brother and sister. Their parents (your and my grandparents) were Rev. George William Allen and Irene Agnes Allen (Ward). Because my Y-DNA testing shows haplotype I-M253 my father William Worden Allen and his father Rev. George William Allen also show I-M253. You see those identifiers in the GENI profiles of these two men and previous male ancestors in the Allen line. Because you are the granddaughter of Irene Agnes Allen (Ward) through her daughter Marion Woodworth Smart (Allen) if you did mtDNA testing we would identify the same haplotype for you, Marion and Irene and the female ancestors back from Irene.
