I may have some good news regarding Mare in Italy.M are is definitely recorded in Italy, and various members of the family have been recorded in the book ''Dizinario Storico Blasonico'' in Italy, who were nobility or members of the nobility in Italy. What makes the content of this book interesting is that it is available online on the internet (Google) and on ''Pinterest'' App 10,000,000.. You click on the post and go through, clicking again on visit. In the to right hand corner is a open enquiry slot, where you can enter the Mare surname. After doing that, you will see yellow bulbs come floating down to the bottom of the page. Click on them, which opens them telling you what information is available. Only problem is the information is in Italian, so you will need someone to translate it.
Also available in this book are the surname Pisani , which became ''Du Pisanie'' in South Africa. The first ''Pisani'' being from Venice, where one member of the family is mentioned. Other interesting Italian South African surnames are ''Napoli,Fatti, Moni, Medici,Viola,Lupini, Martinengo, Marchesi, Raimondo, Raimondi, Fiorentino, Novello, Novella, Vergotini, Costa and others.
What I also discovered on ''Pinterest'' App10,000,000 was the various branches of the regions of Italy including Rome, which is the main branch, and who can point you in the right direction to the archives (archivio di stato) of Calabria.
