John ls not the son of John, Sr. John was born in January 1620/21 in Wanstrow, somerset, England. (The ancestral home of this line of Stones) Is the son of Stephen stone. This information came to light in September 2015 as a result of research done in somerset by a private researcher hired by several members of the stone family. Additional research is underway to confirm that John Sr is the uncle of John, jr. Research done to date has unearthed evidence that the 7 stone family members mentioned in the 1635 land allotment in Salem is as follows: John,Sr, wife Elinor, son Robert, son Nathaniel, daughter Mary stepdaughter Joan nephew John. William and Roger Haskill emergrated as single adult males and were not listed as dependent children of John and Elinor. William moved to Gloucester soon after his arrival.
Stone family researcher's should reference the following:
1) the ancestry of Sarah Stone of Arundel, Maine, by Walter Goodwin Davis, the Southworth Press 1930
2) the Stone Family Association ( archived) a great deal of this information of late has been disproved. However, the court records and timeline offer historical insight.
The Robert Stone of Salem listed by the association John,Sr's son.
To confirm, John Stone, Jr. who married Abigail Dixey should be disconnected as son of John Stone of Salem ; a brother of John Sr named Stephen entered (to be confirmed), his wife unknown, and the younger John moved over as his son?
Erica, yes, this is the John Stone who married Abigail Dixey. A group of us are working to confirm the relationship between John,Sr. And Stephen. John, Jr. Was always referred to as John, sr's son. This was normal and customary for the time period. I have a lead on Stephen's wife, but as yet unconfirmed. Jim
What I have found is in my family tree is John sr. was married twice his 1st wife Elinor Cooke and next wife Ellen Haskell sometime after 1630. They came to Salem sometime around 1636 with his two sons John Stone jr. Nathaniel Stone and Ellen Stone-Haskell childeren also. They moved to Beverly where John sr. ran a ferry. When John Sr. passed in1667 John jr. became John Sr.
