Hi, do you know when or how the family adopted the Szegö surname?

I have looked through the microfilms of Sátoraljújhely, and haven't seen Szegö... so he likely wasn't registered this name at birth.

My Szegö ancestry was from Nagykanizsa, Nemesdéd, and Nagyvazsóny - we changed from Sattler to Szegö in 1906 (My uncle László Sattler b. 1901 became László Szegö, d. 1975), and I've only found one other Szegö family in that era.

Best regards,
David Szegö, Toronto

I think it was part of a general trend toward Magyarization. People adopted Hungarian surnames to assimilate.

Hi David Szego and Benjamin Schoenbrun (Geni Curator),

László Szegő's father Salamon Schönwirth changed his name to Szegő in 1905. He was born in Nagymihály (Michalovce, Slovakia) in 1879 but in 1905 he lived in Sátoraljaújhely. Source: http://www.macse.hu
