George Washington BRADLEY - The parents of George Washington Bradley can't be William Bradley and Jemina Cole. Can someone come up with who GWB's father really was or show me why they think that he was really William Bradley and Jemima Cole?

The following facts about George Washington Bradley in this family tree (GWB hereafter) and The George Washington Bradley in the tree of William and Jemina Bradley (GWB-1 hereafter) are not the same.

GWB was born in VA on 6 APR 1814. This is the date carved in his tombstone. It is the date given in his Obit. 1814 is also given in an affidavit sworn to by John T. Bradley in 1954 as part of the paperwork to get William Anderson Bradley's (WAB) pension for his widow, Jane Hollenbeck Bradley, Worley. I don't know why it was necessary to name WAB's parents for the pension, but it did:" William A Bradley...was the son of G. W. Bradley and Louisa Thompson Bradley; and that G. W. Bradley was born newar Roanoke, Virginia, October [sic, but not correct) 1814."
The Obituaries of GWB state " Died, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Douglas, in Larkin, Atchison county, Kansas, Mr. G. W. Bradley. The deceased was born in Childs county, West Virginia, the year 1814, died July 12,1897, aged 83 years, 3 months and 6 days. At the age of 14, he with his father's family moved to Floyd county, New York. Living there two years, sold out, and moved to Lawrence county, Kentucky. At the age of eighteen was married to Miss Elizabeth Thompson, who preceded him some thirty years ago to the next world. To them nine children were born, three sons and six daughters. Eight survive him. In 1852 he and his family moved to Platt county, Missouri, where he lived one year. He attended the land sale in Ozawkie, brought a farm on Elk creek which is now owned by his oldest son, J. E. Bradley .... He was a member of the M.E. church, south. The Holton Recorder, August 19, 1897.

.... At the age of fourteen he with his father's family moved to Floyd county, Kentucky, living there two years, when he sold out and moved to Lawrence county, Kentucky .... The Tribune, August 20, 1897. "

There is no Childs Co. in W V or VA, There is Childs in Wetzel County, W VA. W VA was part of VA until it succeeded in 1863--long after his birth. I think that it's logical to think that he came from what is now north west West Virginia.

My husband and I took his father (Wallace Wendell Bradley) to Holton in 1999 or 2000 as one of his last wishes before he died. He wanted to locate the stones to the grave of GWB. We found them overturned and buried in mud in a mass of chiggers and mosqitoes in the Burns-Thompson cemetery at the edge of a previous corn field in Holton, Jackson, Kansas. FOR CERTAIN.

The GWB-1 was born (from other trees [I couldn't locate a tree with ANY sources] 24 JAN 1805 • Giles, Virginia, United States. The date is 9 years earlier. If I'm not mistaken, Roanoke is in Giles, VA so the place could match that of the affidavit. The affidavit was incorrect about the birth date, although the year was correct. The affidavit is YEARS after the obit. I would assume that John Thomas Bradley gave the information for both items, but I can't prove that. The Obit was in 1987...much closer to the event in time.

GWB-1 was listed as having died in several places, none of them correct. One was Arkansas, one was Virginia. The Obit 2 days after his death is pretty good evidence that he died in Larkin, Atchison, Kansas and was buried in Holton. Since we found the grave stone (with the correct years for birth and death,), we're 100% sure that it is the correct one. The most common death date for those with GWB-1 is 23 OCT 1856--40 1/2 years BEFORE the absolute certain date of death of GWB.

GWB had siblings known to Wallace Bradley most of whom have different names than the children of William Bradley: These include [and only the dates of GWB are correct, others are guesses in hopes of finding them in some record]:
Levi Bradley 1814–
George Washington BRADLEY 1814–1897
Green Bradley 1820–
William Bradley
James Bradley
Tomas Bradley
Children of GWB include:
James T. Bradley 1834–1920
"Malinda" Ann Sarilda Bradley 1838–1864

William Anderson BRADLEY 1839–1899
Malinda Sarah Bradley 1843–1897
John Greenville "Green""Granvill" Bradley 1846–1927
Caroline Bradley 1850–
Nancy Ann Bradley 1850–1922
Mary A. "Cricket" BRADLEY 1855–
Sarah Caroline "Carrie" Bradley 1862–1951
Martha Alice "Marthy" Bradley 1865–1932

These are in family records and confirmed by census records.

I question that this is the correct marriage information for GW Bradley and Elizabeth Thompson. Webster County is nearly to Ill., a long way from Lawrence Co. where George was living. His obit says he was married at age 18 [ 1832]. MO in 1852
